About us

The Government of Bermuda consists of a Governor, a Deputy Governor, a Cabinet, and a Legislature based on two legislative chambers – a Senate and a House of Assembly. Main Functions of the Legislature Bermuda’s system of Government is based on the “Westminster Model” of parliamentary democracy. It is a system that relies heavily upon the existence of organized political parties, each laying policies before the electorate for approval. The party who wins the most seats at a general election, or who has the support of a majority of members in the House of Assembly, forms the Government. In accordance with the Bermuda Constitution, the leader of the majority party is asked by the Governor to form a Government (i.e. a Cabinet). The largest minority party becomes the official opposition with its own leader and “Shadow Cabinet”. The Cabinet is responsible to the Legislature.

Recently, Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, the Hon. Tinee Furbert, JP, MP, delivered an remarks at the Age Concern’s Public General Meeting. The event provided an important platform to discuss the Government's ongoing commitment to improving the quality of life for Bermuda’s seniors, while also recognizing the contributions made by the community in supporting seniors. Minister Furbert highlighted initiatives during the meeting from the Government’s Mid-Year Budget Review, which reflects a substantial investment in building a fairer Bermuda for seniors. This includes the expansion of support systems for those caring for older adults, including through the Dementia Care Pilot Programme and the development of a senior day care programme. A key highlight of the meeting was the announcement of Bermuda’s first-ever National Seniors Strategy—a comprehensive, decade-long roadmap to guide policy and services for the senior population. Minister Furbert encouraged attendees to participate in the public consultation process, inviting feedback on the draft by the October 18th deadline (https://lnkd.in/eGNRHFKZ) Full statement: www.gov.bm/news

This year’s theme, “Valuing Teacher Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Education,” speaks to the importance of empowering educators to lead change. Minister Rabain reminds us that teachers aren’t just policy implementers—they’re leaders shaping the future of our students and society. Let’s continue to listen, engage, and collaborate with our educators as we build a better education system for all! A special salute to the founders of the Bermuda Union of Teachers for paving the way for teacher advocacy. #EducationReform #EmpowerTeachers #InclusiveEducation #BermudaTeacher
