Massive Climate Returns and Countless Co-Benefits: Yet #DietaryShifts Remain Massively Underfunded A new report by Tilt Collective and Systemiq Ltd. reveals that investing in a plant-rich food system (i.e. 80% global adoption of the #EATLancet Planetary Health Diet by 2050)—can reduce emissions by 28 million tonnes of CO₂e per billion dollars invested. That's more than five times the emissions reduction from the same investment in renewable energy and four times that from electric vehicles! Furthermore, while improved production and waste reduction are crucial and must happen in parallel, investments in plant-rich consumption and production yield 2.5 times the average emissions reductions per $1 billion invested compared to improvements in livestock and crop production alone—including the use of methane inhibitors and the deployment of regenerative agriculture practices. As we know, greater investment in plant-rich food systems could also catalyze enormous co-benefits—a win-win for nature, human health, and animal welfare. Our #FSEC report shows that 70% of the potential economic co-benefits of transforming food systems lie in the shift to healthy diets. Yet, to date, only 2% of the estimated total funding needed to advance a plant-rich food system has been secured (most of which is private funding in alternative proteins). That's why we're so excited about the launch of the Tilt Collective, a new global initiative focused on advancing plant-rich food systems, with a particular emphasis on addressing the interlocking crises resulting from industrial livestock production👏🏼💚🌎. EAT is proud to have been involved in shaping this initiative, and we look forward to continued collaboration. 📘 Read the full report here: https://bit.ly/4ey7LY5 🎥 Watch CEO Sarah Lake inspiring TED Talk here: https://lnkd.in/gb7aSWnX #foodsystemstransformation #planetaryhealthdiet

Today is the #InternationalDayforDisasterRiskReduction. Natural disasters will be more frequent and intense in the coming years - this is an undeniable truth. Even if we were to completely stop emitting greenhouse gasses today, the lag time in global warming would continue to see deleterious effects on the resilience of Earth Systems for decades. While mitigating these unpredictable and often unprecedented disasters is largely beyond our control, we owe it to future generations to develop comprehensive systems to educate and empower those most vulnerable to make a change. To quote Teddie Potter, PhD, RN, FAAN in this year's inaugural lecture for The Global Consortium on Climate and Health Education 'future generations have a right to a better world but do not currently have a voice or a vote'. Today, we must recognize our shared responsibility to ensure a better world for future generations. To find out more, follow this link: https://lnkd.in/dtzipEFz

  • Climate health is human health, and vice versa. We have reached a critical point wherein the ecological paradox, as we know it, is starting to reverse. Without education and collective action, the mission to continually improve upon indicators of human health will grind to a halt as the anthropogenic impacts on our planet degrade Earth systems at the peril of human lives. This webinar from the Planetary Health Alliance discusses the intersection between planetary health and public health, emphasizing the need for education and collective action in addressing ecological determinants of health. The discussion frames planetary health as a solutions-oriented and transdisciplinary field that addresses climate change, biodiversity loss, and other ecological challenges. Additional insights are provided regarding the direct impacts of climate change on human health, such as antimicrobial resistance, malnutrition, respiratory diseases, cardiovascular disease, and mental health issues. Ultimately, the webinar highlights to the importance of education, knowledge sharing, collaboration, and adaptation of strategies to local context - all of which are crucially important in any field currently addressing the climate crisis. https://lnkd.in/eF-FpxBN

  • The EU has recently proposed a 12-month delay to its Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), meant to curb imports linked to deforestation. While some argue the delay allows for better implementation, others see it as a step back in environmental protection. What are your thoughts? Does this delay provide necessary breathing room for industries to adapt, or does it risk losing momentum on critical deforestation efforts? #Sustainability #ClimateAction #EUDR #Environment #Deforestation

  • It would be interesting to see the eventual impacts of these efforts on wildlife populations and trends, recognizing that certain species can survive in patches of forests within agriculture but only if co-existence with humans is strictly monitored and regulated Erik Meijaard

  • Another important message here is that consumers have the right to know the origin of ingredients, including the production standards. Too many producers aren't transparent about these details, whether they are hiding something or not. This needs to change if we hope to achieve a norm wherein consumers can make fully informed decisions about their consumption. Erik Meijaard

93% of all chocolate products in the supermarket is unfair. This means cocoa farmers aren't being paid enough to earn a living income. Yes, some chocolate bars are fair, but what about all the others? And products such as chocolate croissants, custard, muesli, milk cookies, and ice cream? We want that by the end of 2025, all of the chocolate products on supermarket shelves are made of fair chocolate. From premium to private label, and from bar to croissant. That's profit for everyone. Cocoa farmers deserve a living income to support their families, and consumers should have the opportunity to make better choices. Wouldn't you agree? ➡️ Sign the petition to demand fair chocolate! 📝 https://loom.ly/_2pUaW4 #WhereIsMyFairChocolate? #WaarIsMijnEerlijkeChocolade?

  • In April 2024, Eternal Mongolia was announced—a partnership that will unlock US$198 million in new conservation investments over the next 15 years. This initiative is set to power Mongolia towards its 30x30 ambitions, dramatically expanding the protection of the country's rich but threatened ecosystems. What makes this project truly special is its focus on putting communities at the heart of conservation. It aims to secure the Mongolian people's environmental and economic future, demonstrating that sustainable conservation is about collaboration and adaptation to local contexts. Check out this inspiring video from The Nature Conservancy. In it, we meet a former hunter who’s now using his deep knowledge of the land to help rangers protect snow leopard habitats and Mongolia's ancestral lands. This is a fantastic example of how inclusive conservation efforts that incentivize positive behavioural change can ensure a brighter future for both people and wildlife. #Conservation #Sustainability #EternalMongolia https://lnkd.in/dmvaD_Jc

  • A worthwhile listen. The podcast series explores nature-based solutions, heralded as an interdisciplinary approach that, per the IUCN definition, "address societal challenges through actions to protect, sustainably manage, and restore natural and modified ecosystems, benefiting people and nature at the same time." Podcast guests critically assess the current implementation of nature-based solutions to determine whether they can meaningfully deliver across a range of goals, particularly in terms of social justice.
