Our first localized horror game of 2025! Today, January 23rd, Dead of Darkness launched on Steam, and we couldn’t be more excited! We had the pleasure of working on the transcreation of the game’s many achievements, which demanded loads of creativity from our talented translators, and they absolutely crushed it! A true homage to classic horror games like Resident Evil, with stunning portraits and amazing voiceover! Spanish (LATAM): Matías E. Desalvo French: Lucie Melay Italian: Francesco Caligiuri Make sure to follow them and, of course, give Dead of Darkness a chance! I’ll leave the link in the comments!

In horror games, the plot reveals a threat through four stages: Onset, Discovery, Confirmation, and Confrontation. - In the Onset stage, strange things happen, and the characters notice something is wrong, though the player may sense it earlier. Example: Resident Evil 7: Biohazard - Early in the story, Ethan enters the Baker’s house looking for his wife, but things start to feel off. - In the Discovery stage, the characters feel a sense of careful fear. They know there's a threat, but others don't fully believe it yet. Example: Alan Wake - Alan realizes that a dark force controls his surroundings. - In the Confirmation stage, the characters try to convince others of the threat while preparing to face it. Example: The Evil Within - Sebastian begins to understand the nightmare world created by the STEM system and the enemies hunting him. - In the Confrontation stage, the characters face the monster. Even though they fight back, they suffer losses. Example: Dead Space - Isaac Clarke battles the necromorphs, leading to a final fight with the alien artifact causing the outbreak. When localizing these stages, it’s important to keep the slow build of suspense, making sure the dialogue and text show the gradual understanding of the threat. That's why understanding the genre is so important in localization! Have a great weekend! PS: If you want to learn more about the horror genre, a good book is "The Philosophy of Horror". In it, Noel Carroll explains the basic ideas behind the genre. I used this book as a reference for this post.
