Thu Sep 12 2024 Tropical Weather Update Active Systems: The National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on Tropical Depression Seven, currently located over the central Atlantic Ocean. Other Notable Systems: 1. East of the Leeward Islands (AL94): A small low-pressure area a few hundred miles east of the Leeward Islands is producing showers and thunderstorms. Formation chances are low, at 30% over the next 48 hours and through the next week. 2.Offshore the Southeastern U.S.: A non-tropical low-pressure area off the southeastern U.S. coastline presents a small chance of subtropical or tropical development early next week as the system drifts north or northwest. Formation chances are near 0% over the next 48 hours, with a low 30% chance through the next week. What this means: These disturbances are unlikely to impact The Bahamas within the next week. What to do: Keep up with updates from the DRM Authority for any changes in the forecast. Source: National Hurricane Center

The DRM Authority recently completed a comprehensive week-long training on the new Barrett radio system, installed by members of our Technical Team. This upgrade enhances our communications, enabling connectivity across the Caribbean. So far, we’ve successfully established communication with Barbados and Jamaica. Special thanks to Mr. Courtney King from the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) in Barbados and Officer Knowles from the Royal Bahamas Defence Force for their invaluable contributions. #DRMAuthority #CDEMA #CaribbeanCommunication #Teamwork #EmergencyPreparedness

Tue Sep 10 2024 The DRM Authority is currently tracking multiple tropical disturbances across the Atlantic, with varying potential impacts for The Bahamas. 1. In the Gulf of Mexico: Tropical Storm Francine is located approximately 100 miles offshore of northeastern Mexico. Advisories are ongoing as it continues to move through the Gulf. 2. Central Tropical Atlantic: An elongated low-pressure area over the central tropical Atlantic is generating disorganized shower and thunderstorm activity. There is a 40% chance of this system developing into a tropical depression over the next 48 hours, with the likelihood persisting at 40% through the next seven days. 3. Eastern and Central Tropical Atlantic: A trough of low pressure is expected to merge with a strong tropical wave between the west coast of Africa and the Cabo Verde Islands. This system is projected to develop gradually, with a 30% chance of formation in the next 48 hours and a 70% chance over the next week. What this means: Currently, these disturbances present a low to medium risk of development and are not expected to impact The Bahamas within the next week. What to do: Continue to monitor updates from the DRM Authority for any changes in the forecast or potential impacts. Source: National Hurricane Center

The DRM Authority recently hosted some key figures from the US Coast Guard. We were honoured to welcome Rod Elkins, Mass Rescue Operations Specialist from the USCG Seventh District in Miami; LT Connor Pascale, USCG Liaison Officer at the US Embassy in Nassau; and Chris Eddy, Search and Rescue Specialist from the USCG Seventh District. The visit was an excellent opportunity to discuss mass rescue preparedness initiatives and strengthen collaboration between the USCG and The Bahamas. A huge thank you to Captain Sonia Miller of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force for joining us at the DRM Authority's invitation! #DisasterPreparedness #USCG #DRMauthority #Collaboration #Resilience

Thu Sep 5 2024 There are now four tropical disturbances in the Atlantic: 1. In the Northwestern Atlantic: A low-pressure system east of North Carolina with limited shower activity. 2. In the Eastern Tropical Atlantic: A broad low-pressure area with disorganized showers and thunderstorms, drifting northwest with slow development possible. 3. In the Northwestern Caribbean Sea & Gulf of Mexico: A tropical wave moving westward with disorganized activity, potential development after crossing the Yucatan Peninsula. 4. In the Central Tropical Atlantic: A tropical wave east of the Lesser Antilles with disorganized activity, limited development expected due to strong upper-level winds. What this means: These disturbances have low chance of development and are not likely to impact The Bahamas within the next week. What to do: Stay tuned to the DRM Authority for more weather updates or any changes in the forecast. Source: National Hurricane Center

Tue Sep 3 2024 There are three tropical disturbances in the Atlantics at the moment: 1. In the Caribbean Sea heading WNW toward the Gulf of Mexico, 2. In the Eastern Atlantic headed northwest to the Central Northern Atlantic, and 3. In the Central Tropical Atlantic heading west northwest toward the Antilles. In the latter, some slow development is possible during the next couple of days while the system moves west-northwestward. By the end of the week, however, environmental conditions are expected to become unfavorable for additional development. What this means: These disturbances are not likely to affect The Bahamas within the next week. What to do: Stay tuned to the DRM Authority for any updates on any changes in the forecast.
