BIUST Advances Astronomy in Botswana!
BIUST is proud to celebrate another milestone in advancing astronomy development in Botswana! We are honored to welcome international astronomy experts currently visiting our university to install the Transient Array Radio Telescope (TART), a cutting-edge, low-cost 24-element aperture synthesis array.
Why is this important?
TART will build local capacity in radio observations, astronomical research, and data analysis, strengthening Botswana’s role in global space science!
BIUST Public Talk – Meet the Experts!
🔹 Professor Oleg Smirnov – SARAO Research Chair in Radio Astronomy Techniques & Technologies (RATT) at Rhodes University, South Africa. He is a leading expert in radio interferometry, calibration, imaging algorithms, and data processing for major projects like MeerKAT and the Square Kilometre Array (SKA).
🔹 Dr. Tim Molteno – Senior Lecturer in Physics at the University of Otago, New Zealand, and founder of the open-source TART project. His expertise spans Nonlinear Dynamics, Signal Processing, and Radio Astronomy Instrumentation, and he has spearheaded TART installations in multiple countries, including Botswana!
Expanding Astronomy in Africa!
TART has already been installed in Mauritius, Kenya, South Africa, New Zealand, and Bangladesh, with future installations planned for all eight African SKA partner nations!
Join us as we drive change and shape the future of Astronomy in Botswana!
