✊🏾 Black History Month isn’t just about reflection—it’s about resistance. As we honor the legacy of Black leaders who fought for justice, we also recognize the urgent need to defend that progress. Today, we’re witnessing attempts to erase racial justice from policies, education, and government agencies—threatening the very history and equity we fight for. Housing justice is racial justice. From redlining to displacement, racist policies have shaped our housing system. That’s why we must continue working toward solutions that center Black leadership, community power, and equitable investment. This month, let’s not just celebrate history—let’s take action to ensure it isn’t rewritten. #BlackHistoryMonth #HousingJustice

This is an incredible milestone for housing justice in South Berkeley! The purchase of this property as permanently affordable, community-controlled housing was made possible in part through a PBF loan, empowering resident advocacy and strategic partnerships to prevent displacement. PBF is proud to support transformative efforts like these that center community leadership and fight for equitable housing solutions in the Bay Area.
We’re thrilled to share some exciting news: last week BACLT closed on the purchase of 2627 California Street, a 12-unit building in South Berkeley! This marks a huge victory for the residents, who partnered with BACLT to face down imminent displacement and secure permanently affordable, stable, community-controlled homes. We are deeply grateful to the Hamilton family for their stewardship in keeping this building affordable to low-income and primarily Black residents since 1963. We aim to honor their legacy with the ongoing stewardship of this community resource for generations to come. The building is home to an organized, motivated community of residents including families and seniors, many of whom were born & raised in Berkeley. Their advocacy helped secure $10 million dollars in Berkeley’s Small Sites Program – a remarkable feat at a time when the City budget is tight and the State has shelved all of its preservation funding programs. The Small Sites Program was then used to purchase 2627 California Street. Residents remain organized and have already begun training to self-manage and form their own Housing Cooperative. Many thanks to all the partners who made this happen: Councilmember Ben Bartlett and the Berkeley City Council, LISC Bay Area, City of Berkeley’s HHCS staff, Richard Hurlburt and Jaymee Faith Cadiz Sagisi with IMPACT, Ismael Benhamida and Chris Saiz with Compass Real Estate, and the Hamilton family, as well as all the BACLT staff who worked tirelessly to get us across the finish line! We're thrilled to announce the launch of the third cohort of the Policy Fund, awarding $7 million to 10 local governments and their community-based organization partners. This new round of funding builds on the success of previous cohorts, driving equity-centered policies to protect renters, promote community stability, and expand access to affordable housing. This cohort will focus on ambitious and innovative themes like tenant protections, the intersectionality of housing justice with environmental justice and public health, and unlocking alternative funding sources. By equipping grantees with the tools to address political challenges and foster inclusive collaboration, we're laying the groundwork for bold and equitable housing solutions with the power to inspire change regionally and beyond.
