Building a better future for everyone.

About us

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative was founded in 2015 to help solve some of society’s toughest challenges — from eradicating disease and improving education, to addressing the needs of our communities. Through collaboration, providing resources and building technology, our mission is to help build a more inclusive, just and healthy future for everyone. We engage directly in the communities we serve because no one understands how to address our society’s challenges better than those who live them everyday. These partners help us identify problems and opportunities, learn fast and iterate toward our audacious goals for the next century. We strive to be humble, empathetic and life-long learners who work collaboratively to develop community-centered solutions. To help build a more just, equitable future, we embrace people from all backgrounds and experiences, who challenge each other’s assumptions with fresh perspectives. To that end, we are co-creating an environment where everyone feels respected, valued and we celebrate the beauty in the diversity of our shared strength. Understanding the root causes of diseases is crucial, especially when it comes to unexplained conditions in children. Joe DeRisi is helping unravel these medical mysteries through groundbreaking research and technology as president of the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub San Francisco. When pediatric ICU doctor Aaron Bodansky of UCSF encountered children with severe multi-organ inflammation after mild COVID-19 infections, he reached out to Joe. With the help of PhIPseq technology, they discovered that the condition, known as MIS-C, was caused by molecular mimicry. The children’s immune systems mistakenly attacked their own cells, confusing them for COVID-19. This breakthrough not only unraveled the mystery of MIS-C but also showcased the potential of innovative, collaborative research in understanding human diseases. They have now profiled nearly 40,000 individuals across various autoimmune diseases, providing a rich data landscape for AI and machine learning to uncover new insights. “It's a really exciting time. We've spent years sequencing RNA, but now we're exploring the dynamic immune system and what it can do. This new frontier promises numerous discoveries and collaborations.” #MedicalResearch #COVID19 #PediatricCare #AI #AutoimmuneDisease #InnovationInScience

We love open science! One of many reasons is because we know software that is open source is key for making scientific discoveries that will one day cure, prevent and manage disease. As the largest funder committed to supporting critical open source software for science and 6 funding cycles under our belts, we set out to evaluate what the community needs for sustainability, and the successes funding has already led to. Join us in celebrating the open science community. #Science #OpenSource #Software #SciTech #ComputationalBiology

Teachers and school leaders know their kids best—and know what works in the classroom. This week, Our CEO Priscilla Chan and Common joined together to discuss how in order to build an education system that truly supports all students, we’ve got to have educators' expertise in the conversation. We’re excited to bring together educators, researchers and technologists to develop tools to help unlock student potential through Render—our edtech innovation studio.
