Baby Boomers may be expected to live longer, but a recent study has found that they are more likely to suffer from worse health than previous generations 😬 Researchers at the University of Oxford and University College found that people born since 1945 have worse health than previous generations at the same age, resulting in what they call a "generational health drift." The researchers looked at health data of more than 100K adults aged 51 or older in the United States and those aged 50 or older in England and continental Europe, between 2004 and 2018. Across all the regions examined, the prevalence of diabetes and high cholesterol rose at the same rate while diagnoses of cancer, heart problems and high cholesterol increased the most in England and continental Europe. Canadian doctors are being warned to look out for scurvy as a result of growing food insecurity. A report published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) recently is encouraging physicians to consider the possibility of scurvy, particularly among patients at higher risk for nutrient deficiencies, including people with low socioeconomic status and isolated older adults. #PublicHealth

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is characterized by depression that arrives or worsens during the Fall and Winter months. If shorter days and shifts in the weather zap your energy and make you feel blue, you may be feeling thr classic symptoms of SAD. Some experts believe that those seasonal changes disrupt the body’s circadian rhythm. Another related theory is that the changing seasons disrupt hormones, such as serotonin and melatonin, which regulate our sleep, mood, and feelings of well-being. Check out this article on ways to ease symptoms associated with SAD. If you’re struggling and would like to get support related to mental health concerns, please reach out to our team. #MentalHealth

Do you track your resting heart rate? 💙 Resting heart rate (RHR) is the number of heart beats per minute while you're at rest and it’s a snapshot of how the heart muscle is functioning. While a heart rate is considered normal if it’s between 60 and 100 beats per minute, most healthy relaxed adults have a resting heart rate below 90 beats per minute. Keep in mind that RHR can be influenced by many factors, including stress and anxiety, circulating hormones, and medications such as certain antidepressants or blood pressure drugs. Check out this article by Harvard Health Publishing on the importance of this number for our overall well-being👇🏼

October is #BreastCancerAwareness month. Most breast cancers occur in women, although men can get breast cancer too. Research suggests that the primary reason many women develop breast cancer is because their breast cells are exposed to the female hormones - estrogen and progesterone. Major risk factors that are related to developing breast cancer are: • Age - risk increases with age and it mostly occurs in women between the ages of 50 and 69. • History of cancer - those who have had breast cancer in the past have a higher risk of developing breast cancer again. The new breast cancer can develop in the same breast as the first cancer or in the other breast. • Dense breasts - people with dense breast tissue have a higher risk of developing breast cancer than those with little or no dense breast tissue. • Genetic mutations - some gene changes can increase the risk of developing certain types of cancer. Check out this detailed article by the Canadian Cancer Society for more information on this important topic. Please take the time to stay informed and perform self-checks along with routine mammograms via your doctor. Share with your loved ones 💛 #BreastCancer #PreventativeHealth
