Short bursts of mindfulness can boost wellbeing and help tackle anxiety and depression 🧘🏽♀️ Earlier this year scientists from the universities of Bath, Bournemouth and Southampton revealed that simply adding 10 minutes of daily mindfulness to our routine, can help motivate people to improve their lifestyle, including exercising more and embracing healthier eating and sleeping habits. In their study, mindfulness sessions for participants included relaxation exercises, breath-focused exercises, body scans – where you pay attention and check in with your body, from head to toe – and self-reflection. They were delivered through an app. Study link shared in comments 👇🏼 #Mindfulness #MentalHealth

Let’s talk about alcohol and sleep 🍷💤 According to a review study in Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, alcohol (at all doses) delays the first REM sleep period and reduces total night REM sleep. This means a less restful sleep overall. While everyone metabolizes alcohol a bit differently, the best way to ensure that booze doesn't harm our sleep is to avoid it entirely or drink it earlier in the day, say at least 4-6 hours before bedtime. Check out mindbodygreen.com article to learn more more ⬇️ #Sleep #Alcohol

According to recent study, women who used hormone replacement therapy for at least 6 months were 50% less likely to die from cancer and other causes. The largest of its kind study to date, compared the health records of 5,800 women diagnosed with premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) to 23,000 women who entered menopause at a standard age. Researchers found that women with POI are 2x as likely to die from heart disease and 4x as likely to die from any type of cancer. Findings were consistent regardless of whether the menopause was natural or medically induced. Walking after eating may feel like the last thing we want to do, but if weight loss is a personal goal, research supports that short strolls straight after meals can help with that! Why is that? 🧐 The contractions of muscles during walking increases the glucose uptake as it is metabolized by our muscles for energy. This reduces the amount of sugar in the bloodstream. Digestion also uses glucose for energy, and walking boosts the total metabolic cost on the body after eating. Timing is also important ⏰ Walking straight after a meal appears to be more effective at reducing blood sugar (glucose). If we don’t walk straight away, excess glucose in the bloodstream will be stored by insulin and may also be stored as fat. #Lifestyle #Walking

Getting sick often? 🤨 While it may be challenging to deal with infections in the moment, it may also affect our brains in the longer term 🧠 A new study published in Nature Aging suggests that severe infections, including flu, herpes and respiratory tract infections, are linked to accelerated brain atrophy and increased risk of dementia. Other recent studies have found that the flu shot and the shingles vaccine reduce the risk of subsequent dementia in those who get them. In general, infections are associated with increases in pathogenic proteins and decreases in protective ones, which impacts both the brain and cognition. To cut dementia risk and lengthen our cognitive health spans, studies suggest staying socially connected, moderating alcohol intake and addressing hearing loss. Also, vaccinations are the best way to prevent severe infections. If you’re interested in learning more about preventative health, please reach out to our team of nurses. #Longevity #BrainHealth
