The Government of Alberta is taking decisive action to enhance food safety by proposing significant amendments to the Meat Inspection Act. Under the proposed changes, fines for violations will increase dramatically, from a maximum of $10,000 to $100,000 per offense. This substantial hike aims to serve as a strong deterrent, encouraging compliance with the Meat Inspection Act. Minister of Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation, RJ Sigurdson, emphasizes the importance of these changes in maintaining public confidence in our food system. The amendments will also extend the timeframe for investigating and laying charges for illegal slaughter and the sale of uninspected meat, ensuring thorough investigations.
