About us
ABEC South is a non-profit society dedicated to the promotion of better understanding of the building envelope. Building envelopes incorporate the roofs, walls, windows, floors and foundations that enclose the indoor environment of a building. We are interested in their design, construction, evaluation, testing, maintenance, restoration, and renovation. We hold luncheon seminars on the fourth Wednesday of the month from January to May, and again from September to November. Luncheons are held at the Winston Golf Club located at 2502 6th Street NE, Calgary. Other events include our annual golf tournament and educational seminars and courses. You can register through our website for all events. ABEC South also promotes continuing education, provides regular newsletters to our members, and supports education, research and development.

Had one too many design discussions devolve into a design argument? Exhausted from having clients tell you they ‘are just not seeing it, man…’? If so, you’re in luck! Join ABEC South and guest speaker Justin Pockar for an entertaining discussion of design thinking, its applications, and how to perhaps incorporate them into your daily work. Examples from lunar landers to air tightness requirements will be covered to understand the importance of understanding design intent, process, and performance attributes. Participants will: - Increase their knowledge of design language, process and terminology. - Apply common design thinking processes. - Understand how failures in design thinking impact everything from aesthetic choices to the ever increasing scope of the energy codes. This luncheon will also be our Annual General Meeting, and will be held on September 25th at The Winston Golf Club (2502 6th St NE, Calgary), from 11am to 1pm. What can performance monitoring tell you about your home? The authors of this article from the fall 2023 edition of Building Science Perspective discuss how data can be used to benchmark performance, detect and diagnose faults, and optimize operations to reduce energy consumption, peak demand, and consequently utility costs; thus making it a useful add-on to conventional practices of building operation and maintenance.

Shallow Energy Retrofits – Where to start on decarbonizing our existing buildings. Join us for our next luncheon presented by Heather Elliot, P.Eng., LEED Green Associate and Sam Lane at the Winston Golf Club (2502 6 Street Northeast, Calgary) on May 22nd @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm! Deep Energy Retrofits have caught on as a hot-topic for building owners looking to decarbonize their assets, but entry costs are perceived as high and many are struggling to take the first step. With decarbonization, the industry must take a tiered approach in order to establish where the most impact can be made. Heather and Sam will outline the process to initiate the process of reducing emissions and energy in existing buildings. Using their experience in retrofits from building envelope and sustainability perspectives, they will describe how to create a pathway to decarbonization that is intimately linked with capital planning, attention focused on the biggest offenders for emission, and upcoming regulatory policy.
