Sustainability efforts at South Health Campus in Calgary have achieved a North American first. Over the past year, staff have made remarkable strides in plans to reduce the hospital’s carbon footprint. Thanks to these efforts, SHC has been accredited as an International Beacon site — the first in North America. Being recognized as a Beacon site, a designation awarded by the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare in the UK, is an achievement given to organizations that have integrated sustainability into how they educate and train staff in quality improvement. “Healthcare significantly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, particularly through acute care and supply chains. By mitigating these emissions, we can improve public health and reduce healthcare costs," says Dr. Bhavini Gohel, the physician spearheading the initiative. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gx5mjmF4

Islaine Dubuc’s unconditional love of caring for people kept her dream in sharp focus on her journey to practising as a registered nurse in Alberta. Dubuc left Brazil for Alberta in 2012, determined to provide a better life for her parents. “They are the most important people in my life,” she says, acknowledging the sacrifices they made to ensure her success. She arrived without a job and only limited English, but firmly committed to building her nursing career. From housekeeping to childcare, Dubuc took every job — and every opportunity to improve her English before she challenged her English exam and eventually the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for RNs. Her perseverance and compassionate demeanor paid off when she met Alice Edwardson, her manager in Unit 78 Orthopedics at South Health Campus. Edwardson saw something special in Dubuc — and invested the time to see her flourish as a RN. “I knew immediately that she had the right attitude for nursing,” says Edwardson. While Dubuc brought extensive nursing experience from her native Brazil, Edwardson recognized that Dubuc would learn best through a tailored approach. “I found another senior nurse who had the right personality and experience to really help her. They went slowly, adding more responsibilities and, at the end of it, she was very successful.” “I went into nursing so I could help people,” says Dubuc, who’s now six months into her new role. “I feel so happy and proud of myself. It was tough to get here, but I would do it all again, just to arrive where I am today.” Read more: https://bit.ly/3MbMlDz

Every summer, rehabilitation staff at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital’s Specialized Rehabilitation Outpatient Program – Pediatrics, create unique summer camp experiences for children and youth who may not have access to traditional summer camps. Camp Explore is a teen focused social group experience aimed at providing exposure to community activities and opportunities to practice independent life skills. Last week, recreational therapist Shannell Corrodas-Kasper and her rehab colleagues led campers through the structure and activities of a mainstream camp supported by evidence-based therapy practices. Selina Roquin, an educator from the Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA), encouraged campers to explore their creativity by leading a 3D workshop at the Glenrose. “The goal of Camp Explore is to build independence and confidence,” says Corrodas-Kasper. “The AGA art class is great way for campers to showcase their individual strengths, explore their creativity, and express themselves outside of words.”

Alberta Health Services Dr. Max Levine has performed the first robot-assisted autotransplant in western Canada AND Canada’s first robot-assisted kidney transplant! The minimally invasive technique involves smaller incisions and faster recovery, opening the door for patients who might not otherwise be suitable candidates for transplant surgery. “As new technologies come out, new data comes out, you adjust your practice and learn new ways and new approaches,” says Levine, the Surgical Director of the University of Alberta Hospital’s Kidney Transplant Program. “This is another example of how our team continues to evolve and do the best we can for our patient group.” Canada’s first robot-assisted kidney transplant was Carmen Newchuk. Her kidney donor was her husband, Ernie Peters. In 2022, Newchuk was diagnosed with kidney failure due to a rare genetic condition, thrombotic microangiopathy. Over two years, she required 304 dialysis treatments. When it came time for a transplant, her husband stepped up for testing to donate. “It’s quite surreal for us… we’re still a little bit in shock that we are a match because it’s not only a blood match, but… our cells and tissues had to match and it worked out,” says Newchuk. Before Newchuk’s surgery, 27-year-old Amy Dubyk became the first robot-assisted autotransplant patient in western Canada. She needed her left kidney moved to her right side due to Nutcracker syndrome, a rare and painful vein compression disorder. The two successful cases officially launch Edmonton’s Robotic Renal Transplant Program, with the next cases likely in the fall.
