Algoma was proud to be a sponsor at this year’s The Chamber of Marine Commerce - Annual Marine Day on the Hill in Ottawa! Our President & CEO, Gregg Ruhl, took the stage to share why 'marine is awesome' - highlighting the sector's reliability, efficiency, and how we are a driver of economic growth in Canada. He also had the pleasure of introducing the Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Transport who addressed the room with excitement for marine and spoke about the importance of collaboration. Working with government at all levels, we’re committed to addressing challenges and finding solutions that are suited to the unique characteristics of short sea shipping on the Great Lakes - St. Lawrence Seaway. Thank you to our colleagues across the industry for joining together and special thank you to Deputy Minister Transport, Arun Thangaraj, MP Vance Badawey and MP Chris Bittle for your continued support.

Welcome Fure Viskär! We're thrilled to see her sail under FureBear ownership. She is the third out of ten newbuilds to be delivered in the joint venture. A true testament to the strength of our Swedish-Canadian partnership and our shared commitment to sustainable shipping!
A ceremony marking a milestone, as Fure Viskär changes flags. As of this moment she is in Swedish/Canadian #furebear ownership and part of the Swedish merchant fleet. 🥳 See Captain Roger Niklasson hoist the blue and yellow banner with the help and cheering from his crew. Algoma was proud to participate in this year’s #QuébecMaritimeDay, organized by the St. Lawrence Economic Development Council (SODES). This year’s theme, Strengthening the Strategic Positioning of the St. Lawrence, brought together marine industry stakeholders to discuss the future of our sector. Our team engaged in insightful discussions with Quebec ministries alongside our industry colleagues, tackling key topics like decarbonization, labour challenges, future opportunities, and how Ontario and Quebec can collaborate to achieve a level playing field across our provinces. A reception at the National Assembly of Quebec capped off the day, where Deputy Premier and Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Geneviève Guilbault addressed the group reiterating the importance of Marine and working together to ensure the environmental, economic, and social prosperity of the Great Lakes region. Merci à la SODES pour l'organisation et au gouvernement du Québec pour son soutien à cette journée importante!

Yesterday, as a member of the Ontario Marine Council (OMC), Algoma had the privilege to participate and attend their luncheon where Premier Doug Ford was presented with the inaugural "Ontario Marine Champion" award, which recognizes outstanding leadership and commitment to advancing marine shipping in Ontario. As the largest marine carrier on the Great Lakes and a proud Ontario-based business for 125 years, we thank Premier Ford and Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria for their work on advancing the first-ever Ontario Marine Transportation Strategy and for their support and leadership in ensuring the marine sector in Ontario remains strong, competitive, and sustainable. Meet Megan, the Algoterra's 2nd Mate! Megan took a leap into the maritime industry later in life, transitioning from a small Saskatchewan farm 🌾 to life on the water. "The maritime industry has brought me so many opportunities and the freedom I never could’ve had in a traditional career. Skilled crew are in high demand, and there are many opportunities for career advancement. It gives me the opportunity to travel and visit friends and family." 🌊 Since joining Algoma in 2017 as a navigation cadet, Megan has completed both her Watchkeeping Mate and Chief Mate certificates. Now, she’s focused on earning her Master certificate. Studying while working rotations can be tough, but for Megan, it’s always worth it. "Attitude is really key. As you build your knowledge, you’ll have bad days, but you’ll grow as you develop your skills. Stay focused, stay positive, and you will achieve it." 💪 Sailing has also given Megan the opportunity to 🌍 travel, including a trip to Portugal for the Algoterra's drydock. "It’s a great learning experience to see the vessel out of the water for key maintenance and inspections—offering a unique perspective you don’t get anywhere else." Megan took the leap - now it's your chance to #sailwiththebear 🐻 Apply today at algonet.com/careers
