Maryam Yaftian started her career at #AmicaLionsGate as a Concierge over seven years ago. She then became a Memory Care Coordinator at the residence and developed her skills to become the General Manager at #AmicaArbutusManor. Read this Q&A to learn about her professional journey and how she manages a successful team that delivers exceptional impact year over year. #OwnYourImpact Q: What’s a favorite quote, book, or mentor (from a woman) that was inspirational for your career to flourish and grow? A: “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” – Maya Angelou. This quote has always reminded me that growth is continuous, and every experience is a step forward. Q: How do you empower women in the workplace and lift each other up? A: By mentoring, sharing knowledge, and creating opportunities for women to lead. Encouragement and recognition go a long way in building confidence and fostering a strong, supportive team. Q: What biases or stereotypes do you enjoy challenging? Why? A: I challenge biases around gender, age, ethnic background, and societal expectations of how women should look and behave. In leadership, an ambitious woman is often seen as aggressive, while a man is considered career driven. A passionate woman may be labeled as too emotional, while a man is seen as strong and passionate. Additionally, ethnic and cultural backgrounds often influence perceptions of leadership, creating more barriers for women of diverse backgrounds. These double standards need to change, and I strive to lead by example, proving that skill, dedication, and leadership have no gender or ethnicity. Q: Share a moment of triumph or achievement in your career. A: Seven years ago, I had to change career paths and start over as a casual concierge. Despite doubts and objections from others who questioned my aspiration by suggesting that I was undermining my education and experience, I trusted my journey, learned the basics, and stayed true to my purpose. Within months, I moved into a coordinator role, then became a general manager, and continue to grow. Through it all, I never forgot the importance of my team—the people who supported me along the way. My greatest achievement isn’t just my career growth but the incredible team I’ve built and valued throughout the journey.

This month, we are celebrating women who have helped pave the way for other women to succeed; like Elizabeth from #AmicaErinMills. As a Medical Mission Sister, Elizabeth's career offered her the opportunity to travel the world and contribute her medical skills to soldiers. Her impactful experiences resulted in her meeting Mother Teresa. Watch this video where she fondly remembers her time in India and meeting the woman that continues to inspire her today: https://lnkd.in/gTn9ngv7
