Congratulations to Emily B. Kaliel!   Her research examines the public health programs focused on nutrition in Alberta from the 1920s to the 1960s. It reveals how these programs, while improving health, were also tied to settler colonialism and Indigenous land dispossession. By connecting public health and land, the project highlights the complex role of science in shaping both health and control over Indigenous lands.   Read more about her project here: https://lnkd.in/g24AXMtw   #HoH2024 #HistoryofHealthcare University of Guelph

How do you lead when the world is watching? Donna Duncan, CEO of the Ontario Long Term Care Association, reflects on how the COVID-19 pandemic challenged leadership. With anger, fear, and misinformation circulating, leadership was no longer just about process. It was about maintaining calm and thoughtfulness. Congratulations to Fiona L. Kenney! Her project studies how architecture influenced the development of long-term and palliative care since the 1960s. By studying the design of three groundbreaking care facilities, it highlights how nurses, caregivers, and patients played key roles in shaping these spaces. The research shows how architecture has contributed to new ideas of care for aging and terminally ill populations. 2024 marks 40 years of the Canada Health Act, a key milestone in our country's universal healthcare. Yet, as we reflect on its achievements, we must also confront the challenges that have emerged in our healthcare system. I’ll be joining Dr. Colleen M. Together, we’ll be discussing how to modernize the Canada Health Act and explore innovative ways to build a more resilient and patient-centered healthcare system. This conference is a critical platform for shaping the future of Canadian healthcare. I invite all those passionate about advancing our system to join us as we reimagine healthcare to meet today’s challenges. Congratulations to Vincent Auffrey! His research challenges the assumption that French Canadians rejected eugenics due to Catholic beliefs. It examines how eugenic ideas, such as public education campaigns and premarital health exams, became part of French Canadian medical practice in the early 20th century. The project sheds light on how eugenics influenced medical discourse and practice, revealing a complex relationship between religion, medicine, and society.
