In the seven years since Unity Health Toronto became a network, we have worked to drive system transformation and improve patient care by harnessing the collective power of our individual sites to create the best care experiences, together. Unity Health’s 2023-24 Annual Report highlights the ways we have leveraged the connection of our communities to be leaders in our areas of world class specialty care, artificial intelligence and health equity. Because of these communities, we have accomplished many things: having our trauma program verified as a Level 1 Trauma Centre by the American College of Surgeons, preparing for our new Electronic Patient Record, and taking meaningful steps to promote equity and to make sure everyone who works at and enters our sites feels welcomed, respected and included. This report features the hard work and dedication of so many staff, physicians, learners, volunteers and patient family partners, and tells the stories of the incredible patients and families who have sought care at our sites. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to Unity Health’s achievements this year. None of it would be possible without you. Read the Annual Report: https://lnkd.in/dMM23Dfr

More than 130,000 Ontarians live over 200km from their family doctor, according to research from Upstream Lab at St. Michael's Hospital. Patients who live far from their doctors are more likely to go to the ER and are less likely to do cancer screenings. https://lnkd.in/g-v9Krzv

When Jenna De Leon, a newly graduated Registered Practical Nurse (RPN), does a clinical task for the first time, she doesn’t have to face it alone. She has built-in support thanks to a new provincial program. Launched in 2023 by the Government of Ontario (https://lnkd.in/dk4SEqmq), the Clinical Scholar Program enables novice nurses to learn from experienced nurses – or Clinical Scholars – right at the bedside, in real-time. So far Unity Health Toronto has provided Clinical Scholar support to more than 145 novice nurses, internationally educated nurses, and nurses wanting to upskill. “Being a Clinical Scholar enabled me to grow professionally as a nurse to be a mentor and a teacher,” says Rosaline Lai, a Clinical Scholar on the Interprofessional Resource Team at St. Joseph's Health Centre, Toronto. “I’m taking what I’ve learned through the course of working as a nurse and empowering others in their practice." Here's how this innovative program is helping new and experienced nurses grow: https://lnkd.in/dTqAvQPE

“It’s estimated that 70% of cancer deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, while only 5% of resources are spent on cancer care in these countries, so this is a huge equity gap we are trying to address,” says Dr. Nazik Hammad. 🡲 uoft.me/aGX
