We support feminist and gender justice movements to thrive, challenge oppressions and co-create feminist realities

About us

The Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) is a global, feminist, membership, movement-support organization. For over 35 years, AWID has been a part of an incredible ecosystem of feminist movements working to achieve gender justice and women’s human rights worldwide. Our Initiatives work at the intersections of the sites of change we work to address, the movements we prioritize, and the tactics we use: Advancing Universal Rights and Justice: We monitor, document and make visible how anti-rights actors are operating and colluding in multilateral spaces and support feminist, women’s rights and gender justice movements and allies to counter their influence and impact. Building Feminist Economies: Working on extractivism, tax justice and corporate accountability, we build knowledge on corporate power and influence; advocate for corporate accountability and equitable distribution of wealth; and amplify feminist proposals for just economies. Resourcing Feminist Movements: We develop accessible, action-oriented analysis on the state of resourcing for feminist movements. We aim to influence funders’ policies and practices, deepen and sustain funding for feminist social change, and support movements’ needs and strategies. Co-Creating Feminist Realities: We unearth, co-create and amplify feminist realities, proposals and narratives and in doing so, contribute to making visible feminism in practice, inspiring exchange and joint action, and providing spaces for strategizing, thus increasing the collective impact and power of feminist alternatives.

🇲🇲On 28 March, 2025, the people of Myanmar experienced a catastrophic 7.7 magnitude earthquake followed by a 5.5 magnitude aftershock. The death toll stands at 2600 and counting, with a possibility of more aftershocks in the days to come. 🇲🇲This humanitarian crisis has only exacerbated the political crisis that Myanmar is embroiled in for the last 4 years. 🇲🇲We, at Urgent Action Fund, Asia & Pacific, continue to support women, trans, and non-binary human rights defenders and activists in Myanmar. We have kickstarted our rapid response grant making, ensuring that women’s rights organizations and community-led responses are supported rapidly, with the least bureaucratic processes. 🇲🇲As feminist first responders during a crisis, our long and trusting relationships with movements in Myanmar affirm our belief that response to humanitarian crises must be informed by, and relevant to, their political context and reality. We are, therefore, in close contact with those on the frontlines, and acting as per their advice and needs of the hour. 🇲🇲Our past grantees, advisors, and local partners have informed us that the immediate requirements on ground include access to basic medicines and sanitary pads, temporary shelters, mosquito repellent, power banks, night lighting and solar lights, and dry food, among other things. What happened in Istanbul on March 8, International Women's Day? "For 23 years, our Feminist Night March in Taksim has grown in strength, despite facing relentless pressure, bans, and obstacles. This year, on March 8, tens of thousands of women and LGBTI+ individuals united, drawing strength and solidarity from one another to stand against the inequality, discrimination, exploitation, and violence perpetuated by a male-dominated system. Together, we amplified the spirit of our feminist rebellion and solidarity. Since 2003, the Feminist Night March has served as a platform for us to voice our demands and demonstrate our commitment to reclaiming the nights and streets. However, since 2019, the march has faced systematic obstruction. Authorities have violated multiple constitutional rights in an attempt to suppress our demonstration, resulting in police violence and mistreatment of participants. On Friday, March 7, at the end of the workday, the Beyoğlu District Governor’s Office announced an unlawful ban on all protests in the Beyoğlu district for March 8, further restricting our right to assemble. Last year, the Istanbul Regional Court of Appeals overturned a similar ban issued by the governorship and district governor’s office, stating that “it is the duty of the state to facilitate and protect the exercise of the right to peaceful assembly” and that “the choice of venue for meetings and demonstrations should, as a rule, be at the discretion of the organizers.” Despite this ruling, authorities imposed severe limitations again this year, just as they have in the past. On March 8, at 2:00 PM, two of Taksim’s busiest subway stations and the funicular were shut down. Barricades were erected from Taksim Square to Karaköy, and police forces and vehicles filled Istiklal Street and its side streets. Our fundamental right to walk freely through the city was violated. Although we hold the constitutional right to demonstrate and march, we struggled through blocked streets just to reach Taksim. In the face of these obstacles, we still gathered on Sıraselviler Street, resolute in our intention to unite as feminists on March 8, just as we had planned from the start." https://lnkd.in/dJaaadVg
