Heading back from a full week in Davos and reflecting on so many good connections and conversations. From stories of innovation and discovery to the dialogue and framing of significant challenges by world leaders, this was a week of dialogue on major drivers of change. My big takeaway, and one that I shared in my sessions, is that our capacity to listen, connect, and align on shared outcomes remains the superpower of people in the important work of improving lives and building thriving cities. Here are a few quick links to my sessions and comments: In Brick by Brick I discuss housing and public-private partnership: https://lnkd.in/eTBk24gC In Gen Z Changes the Map we look at generational trends and implications on work, the workplace, and development: https://lnkd.in/enZhhEpi I also shared with ZDF my support for public sector leaders removing barriers that prevent needed investment and growth: https://lnkd.in/eNwWTABw #WEF25 #Davos #AYdifference Images: World Economic Forum

I’m looking forward to participating in the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting next week in Davos. At Avison Young, we’re committed to fostering thriving cities, which requires bold vision and strong partnerships. That’s why we’ve joined forces with WEF. Ahead of the event, I authored a guest blog on one of the most pressing issues in our industry: the rising demand for energy and the need for clean power to ensure a sustainable future. I wrote about how digital lifestyles are driving unprecedented energy consumption and putting pressure on cities to meet that demand. Many of our clients are facing project delays due to cities’ inability to provide the necessary power, and our market analysts predict this will only continue to grow. Later in the week, I’ll be speaking on the “Gen Z Changes the Map” panel to discuss how Gen Z’s values and preferences are reshaping everything from workplace culture to public policy and real estate development. I can’t wait to share more on this with you! https://lnkd.in/eEEWCXRM #WEF25 #Davos #AYdifference

    Chair & CEO

It was an honor to join Hauwa Mufti, Janet Truncale, and our moderator Jonathan Haidt for a quick, but meaningful conversation on Gen Z and their influence on the future of work, cities, and how real estate can respond. A throughline for me is the power of connection. How the digital and physical environment develops to foster meaningful connections personally and professionally impacts everything from where we live to how we work. For real estate, I see this as a critical reminder that the public sector, private sector, and communities need to sit at the table and align on the projects and outcomes that matter. Gen Z isn’t shy about priorities: social connection, affordability, safety, and purpose in the office stand out to me as outcomes that benefit us all. • Real estate is shifting globally -- industrial demand is booming, residential markets are holding steady, and supply challenges are changing how people buy and rent. Leaders like our David Jackson in Vietnam and Mark Fieder in Canada help make sense of it all, turning global trends into local opportunities. In real estate, the best insights come from those who live and breathe their markets every day. Globally, we’re seeing how economic shifts and interest rates are shape our industry. Industrial spaces are in high demand, residential properties are holding steady, and in some cities, limited supply is pushing potential buyers to consider renting instead. It’s a complex chessboard, but that’s where leaders like Mark Fieder, President of Avison Young Canada, truly shine. Mark’s deep understanding of Canada’s real estate market helps us navigate these challenges and spotlight opportunities. The Edge Malaysia: https://lnkd.in/eHz-tYkB #CRE #AYdifference

  • At the start of 2024, we looked at the big trends shaping #CRE this year -- like how AI is transforming location analysis and rethinking the office worker as a consumer: https://lnkd.in/eQB2aEtx As we gear up for 2025, we’d love your take: Which trend from 2024 will matter most in the year ahead? 🟠 Worker as consumer: Offices are rethinking design and amenities, inspired by retail to create spaces people want to be in 🟠 Beyond the storefront: Retail is bringing fun, immersive experiences to empty spaces with pickleball courts and LED displays 🟠 No vacancy: Rising costs are putting homes out of reach, deepening the housing crisis for middle-income families 🟠 Rising tide of insurance: Extreme weather is driving up commercial property insurance costs   Share your thoughts in the comments -- how will your top trend continue to make an impact? We’re all ears!
