From the 1940s to the 80s, the federal government invested heavily in affordable housing. But they stopped since then, and Canada's housing crisis has since spiralled. Now is the time for the federal government to step up and build affordable housing again. In our latest episode of Progressive Political Economy, housing expert at School of Cities, University of Toronto Carolyn Whitzman discusses Canada's historic housing investments since the Second World War, and why we need these programs today to make housing affordable. Private nursing agencies are a “band-aid” to our health care system staffing crisis, according to Professor Joan Almost at Queen’s University and author of the new Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions report “Opening the black box: Unpacking the use of nursing agencies in Canada”. But with the COVID-19 pandemic and an increased reliance on nursing agencies to fill the gaps, with little oversight, costs to our public health care system have ballooned to pay these private agencies. New on the Perspectives Journal podcast: "Unpacking the use of nursing agencies in Canada with Joan Almost." Listen to the full episode at https://lnkd.in/eZNSb9ip

"Normally, when a party runs extreme candidates, the news media is there to scrutinize and focus public attention on their problematic actions or beliefs. But it’s unclear how many British Columbians are even seeing this news." PressProgress Editor Luke LeBrun diagnoses this "symptom of democracy with a broken information system," for The Toronto Star. "All of this could be funny," he writes, "if the stakes weren’t so serious." Read the full article at https://lnkd.in/dd36jWdQ

A tax system that works for the benefit of wealthy investors and against the interests of ordinary Canadians is fuelling a national housing crisis. As Silas Xuereb of Canadians for Tax Fairness explains, our tax system allows Real Estate Investment Trusts (or REITs) to grow with inflated profits all while jacking up rents in “investment properties”. New on the Perspectives Journal Podcast: Corporate Tax Breaks, Housing Heartbreaks with Silas Xuereb. Financialization has been hurting housing affordability, and tax cuts for corporate landlords have only worsened the problem. In the latest Perspectives Journal Podcast we spoke with Silas Xuereb, policy analyst, PhD candidate, and author of a new report titled “How tax breaks are worsening Canada's housing affordability crisis”. To equitably address Canada’s housing crisis, “we also need to think about who owns the supply,” he says. The ethos for how to manage properties changes based on the mandate, and Real Estate Investments Trusts, or REITs, stand out from the rest due to their singular mandate of increasing profit.
