📈 The global economy's plastic use has grown 230-fold from 1950 to 2019 and is expected to triple by 2060. The impact of the resulting plastic pollution on the environment and human life is catastrophic. For #PlasticFreeJuly, we examine the role trade plays in plastic pollution, and how governments worldwide are implementing measures to prevent it. 📌 Read our brief on current trade policy measures against plastic pollution: https://lnkd.in/emyeKP3J Alice Tipping | Ieva Baršauskaitė | Tristan Irschlinger #PlasticTradeSolutions #PlasticPollutionTradeSolutions #PlasticTrade

Mangroves are extraordinary ecosystems contributing hugely to the protection of coastal communities worldwide. But they are disappearing rapidly when compared to overall global forest losses, with serious ecological and socio-economic impacts. An estimated 35% of all mangrove forests were lost between 1980 and 2000. Through projects and initiatives including the Nature-Based Infrastructure Global Resource Centre and the NAP Global Network, IISD is working to understand the value and contribute to the restoration of mangroves. We’re focusing more and more on projects that use the power of nature to help communities adapt to climate change. This UNESCO #MangroveDay, we’re sharing just some of the immense benefits mangroves offer to our climate, biodiversity and communities 👇

🌍 With countries worldwide enforcing a 15% minimum corporate tax rate, policymakers must urgently rethink fiscal and investment strategies in Special Economic Zones (SEZs). Failing to comply to the new rules, they risk losing tax revenues generated within their territory to other jurisdictions. Our newest policy brief delves into optimizing tax breaks to capture revenue and promote investments that drive long-term economic, environmental, and social benefits. It offers key recommendations for policymakers aiming to reform fiscal incentives in SEZs. Learn more and shape the future of SEZs 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gUASjZS8 Watch a recording of our webinar sharing the latest updates, expert insights, and experiences from developing countries on implementing the #GlobalMinimumTax🌍 https://lnkd.in/emydGKWi

DATA ANALYSIS | Oil and gas exploration is surging to pre-Covid levels, despite an agreement at COP 28 to transition away from fossil fuels. Experts at IISD crunched the numbers from Rystad Energy’s industry database, with a little help from AI. They found: ▶ Resources discovered in 2024 threaten to unleash 12 billion tonnes of CO2 if fully exploited—more than the past four years’ discoveries combined. ▶ Rich countries including the United States, Canada, Australia, Norway, and the United Kingdom issued licences 2014-2023 with embodied emissions 5x the size of all other oil and gas producers put together. ▶ China, Mexico, and Russia are set to license the biggest volumes of oil and gas in the second half of 2024. ▶ Companies spent USD 26.2 billion looking for more oil and gas in the past 12 months. Equinor, Shell, and BP were the biggest investors. ▶ If all licensed fields are fully exploited, the world will extract more than twice as much oil and gas in 2040 as is compatible with a 1.5°C global warming limit and the “production gap” is widening at its highest rate since 2015. Ending fossil fuel expansion is vital to hold global warming to 1.5C. The Government of India released the 2024 Union Budget yesterday with a renewed focus on critical minerals, renewable energy, planning energy transition pathways, and more! IISD’s Shruti Sharma explains, “[The] Budget made cautious yet strategic announcements, reflecting the government's ongoing strategy to enhance both fossil fuel and renewable energy. We see a shift towards greener initiatives, although a gradual one." India has an ambitious goal of getting half its energy from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030. Experts from IISD and the Center for Study of Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP) explain what the Budget’s measures mean for the country's energy transition. Watch now 🔽

A lot of work at International Institute for Sustainable Development trade policy team is about dissecting the fears and concerns. My #plastics workstream is the best illustration of it: while the governments worldwide are engaged in global #PlasticsTreaty negotiations to put an end to #plasticpollution, there’s a lot of concern about how #trade rules and new environmental regulations would interact with each other. It’s a legitimate concern – but not an unfamiliar one! Tristan Irschlinger and I have already written about the broad range of different trade-related plastics measures that are adopted globally by all types of governments, targeting a broad range of plastics and plastic products, and employing all types of trade instruments. While we hope to see much more to come from the #INC process that would hopefully also help the #WTO members go with it in a more harmonious way, the reality is also that individual plastics regulations are here to stay. In our new report we are looking at how much of the problem is it and what are the important principles to keep in mind as the governments are tackling their plastics problems. Tristan Irschlinger , Vicente Guazzini, PhD , Andrew Aziz and I dug into the #WTO databases looking for trade frictions linked to plastics policies and came out with a short set of recommendations for the future policies! While it can be as simple as uploading the draft regulations online early enough for the trading partners to be able to read it and adjust on time, making sure that the stakeholders are engaged in the development of new norms or that relevant international or regional standards are used to help business adjust as fast as possible – there are ways to make sure that future trade-related plastics policies can be adopted smoothly and help everyone move together faster! https://lnkd.in/eJPyJU7j #roadtobusan #INC5 #plasticpollutiontradesolutions

Rejuvenating the ecosystem of the Reventazón river basin in Costa Rica is crucial to protecting the region’s supply of water, food and energy from the impacts of climate change and land degradation. The basin supplies the region’s eight hydropower dams, as well as providing San Jose, the capital city, with 25% of its drinking water. The Reventazón region is also a productive agricultural area, supplying 85% of the country’s vegetable crops. Nature also thrives in the 25 protected wilderness areas around the basin, including more than 250,000 hectares of forests which play a fundamental role in protecting water resources. Restoring the ecosystem is crucial to stabilize hydrology and ensure a reliable water and energy supply. Unpack the findings of a new Nature-Based Infrastructure Global Resource Centre report produced with World Resources Institute, which assesses the investment case for ecosystem-based adaptation measures: https://bit.ly/3A0E3ve #ecosystembasedadaptation #climateadaptation #hydropower #naturebasedsolutions #watermanagement #costarica

"There are echoes here of another global ambition established in 2015, the Paris Agreement’s goal to keep global warming below 1.5°C, which is also receding over the horizon." Fresh from negotiations in New York, the Earth Negotiations Bulletin team analyses #HLPF2024, which confirmed what many already knew or suspected—only 17% of the SDGs’ 169 targets are on track to be achieved, nearly half are showing minimal or moderate progress, and progress on over a third has stalled or even regressed. Reflecting on HLPF 2024, and the hope placed in the UN at a time of fracturing multilateralism to move the needle on the many economic, social, and environmental issues plaguing the world, the analysis examines prospects for the Summit of the Future in September. ⏭ As Border Carbon Adjustments are set into motion worldwide, we need to evaluate their impacts on trade, economic development, and employment, especially for developing countries. 🤝 In a new report with IISD, University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus presents the challenges of trade-dependent hydrocarbon-based small-island developing state that is looking for the pathways for economic diversification, green job creation and preservation of its biodiversity treasures: https://lnkd.in/guUDmRG4 👉 The report forms part of a series highlighting the views from those with a real stake in how border carbon adjustments are designed, but who rarely get a voice in international debate: business, investors, NGOs, labour unions. #climateaction #BorderCarbonAdjustment #CBAM #EUCBAM
