We have some bittersweet news: After 12 years, Rev. Christopher White is stepping down as Broadview’s “Question Box” columnist. White has been our stalwart advice-giver, offering tips to United Church members on everything from board scuffles to the future of the denomination, but he has decided to move on. “I felt that it was time for a younger voice and one that was in active ministry,” he says. You can still find White hosting our National Online Reading Clubs and contributing freelance stories to Broadview. And we can't wait to introduce you to our new "Question Box" columnist soon!

I loved working with Anne Thériault on her story from our January/February issue about a United church's effort to host a community of sleeping cabins in Kingston, Ont. We went in wanting to tell a story about a church doing good and an innovative response to homelessness, but then we learned that the project was being put on ice. This was hugely disruptive for the residents, and less importantly, we had to reshape our story. But it is a great piece about when something doesn't work — and where you can find hope regardless. 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀! 𝗜𝗻 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗠𝗮𝗴𝗮𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗲 As we kick off Black History Month, I’m incredibly honored to be featured in the January/February 2025 edition of Broadview magazine! 🙌🏾💫 It was a privilege to sit down with journalist Jasmine Mahoro to discuss the vision and mission of the BC Community Alliance as a cofounder. In this interview, I share how we’re empowering Black youth, pushing for systemic changes in BC's education system, and advocating for legislative reform. From addressing the racist bomb threat at Lord Byng Secondary School to creating mentorship programs that support financial literacy, mental health, and career readiness, this is just the beginning. The future is bright, and we’re just getting started in making sure every Black youth is seen, heard, and set up for success. This work is personal, impactful, and necessary. Read the full article below to discover how we’re reshaping the narrative and opening doors for the next generation of leaders. 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸: https://lnkd.in/gYtkCSZC Together, we rise. Together, we impact. ✊🏾✨ #BlackHistoryMonth #CommunityImpact #BlackYouthEmpowerment #SocialChange #Leadership #BCCommunityAlliance

It was such fun to edit this piece on the ethics of overtourism for Broadview Magazine's January/February 2025 issue. Larry Krotz, the writer, is both deep and witty. https://lnkd.in/g4WBQNMG

A warm congratulations to former United Church moderator and Broadview corporation member Very Rev. Marion Pardy, who has been awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal for her interfaith work and advocacy around a guaranteed livable income. Since 2007, she has been a director (and is now a chair) of the Religious Social Action Coalition of Newfoundland and Labrador, which is made up of directors from various faiths, including Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Christian and Sikh, who all have the goal of eliminating poverty in the province and in Canada. “From pew to pulpit, to public officials, to public and social media; from synagogue to mosque, to temple, to Gurdwara, Dr. Pardy has spent years in education, consciousness-raising, advocacy and solidarity,” says Haseen Khan, a director of the organization who put forward the nomination on the group's behalf. “[Her efforts highlight] for society the benefits of the pluralistic nature of our country and the necessity for appreciation and understanding of all religions, noting that the many paths to the Divine command respect from all.” Photo: Marion Pardy (left) at a Diwali event in St. John's on Nov. 2, 2024.
