Calgary celebrated 40 years of BIA's in the city today with Mayor Jyoti Gondek providing the proclamation. Chinatown BIA was first established in 2016 and joined the BIA community. Now there are 15 BIA's in the City of Calgary . BIA's try hard to make a difference in the communities that they serve. Happy Birthday BIA's!
Come Discover the Treasures of Chinatown and that includes all the cultural artwork - today a mural was celebrated that was recently installed and designed by artist Jarett Sitter . This is a project supported by Calgary Arts Development and the City of Calgary that includes three wall-mounted panels, two on First St. SE and one at Fourth Ave. SE. Each panel represents a fusion of animals important to both cultures: A Chinese dragon with the head of a bison, a phoenix with the head of a golden eagle, and a lion and bear with their cub, which combines traits of both animals. Today is the Mid Autumn Festival - it falls on 15th day of the eighth lunar month, and celebrated namely in East and Southeast Asia. It is a time for families to gather to sample autumn harvests, light lanterns and admire what’s believed to be the fullest moon of the year. Enjoy the bright moon today and have some moon cakes.
Have you heard of the YYC Bubble Tea Fest and Asian Dessert Festival? It is a one month long festival in Calgary with shops in Calgary Chinatown BIA, Crescent Heights Village BIA and International Avenue BRZ. This past weekend the top 5 shops voted by patrons had a showdown with judges - and congratulations to all who made it to the top 5. We are pleased to announce that Chinatown's Mama Desserts took home the top prize. You can come down to Chinatown and enjoy this fabulous dessert too. Take a look at the winning entry. Another busy event this past weekend with the Lantern Festival to celebrate the Mid Autumn full moon. Thanks to the thousands of Calgarians that came out to Chinatown to experience all that the community has to offer. Everyday there are lots of different treasures to find in Chinatown. Take a look at the set up early at the Festival. Board members Sandy Kwong, Bill Zheng and Harry Yee were at the BIA booth. Artist Rozzie Lee at her booth and Kenny Jeon playing on the stage. Celebrate the Mid Autumn Festival at our upcoming Lantern Festival on Friday, September 13. from 4 PM - 11 PM Enjoy an evening of performances, vendors, food trucks and a Lantern Parade featuring the Dragon dancers. All in Chinatown Daqing Square on the West side of the Cultural Centre. Fun for the whole family. Rain or shine this is an event not to miss.
The board and admin team celebrated together with the artists and sponsors of the new mural on Centre Street. Chinatown welcomes new artwork and supporting artwork to welcome visitors to the community.
