About us

WHO WE ARE Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) is a passionate team of urban placemakers; we are city-builders devoted to making Calgary a better place to live. HISTORY CMLC was incorporated in 2007 as a wholly owned subsidiary of the City of Calgary with the mandate to achieve the City's objectives for urban densification and community renewal, infrastructure investment and placemaking – both within and outside the Rivers District. WHAT WE DO Over the past decade, CMLC has rebuilt East Village from the ground up. Through public infrastructure improvements, strategic placemaking and enthusiastic programming, we have breathed new life into downtown Calgary’s east end. With East Village standing proudly as a testament to our talents in visioning, redevelopment, placemaking, programming and relationship-building, we’ve extended our efforts into the further reaches of the Rivers District. We have now turned our attention to creating a vision for east Victoria Park through the Rivers District Master Plan.

  • Meet Our Placemakers - Ashton Lee, Project Manager As part of CMLC’s Building and Infrastructure team, Ashton holds more than a decade of project management expertise helping bring major city-building projects to life. Currently, she supports the delivery of the 17 Ave SE Extension and Victoria Park/Stampede Station Rebuild project. “I've been supporting this project for two years, and I would say the most satisfying part is just seeing the movement from plans to real life. When you’re in the middle of a project, it can often feel like you’re just working but not yet seeing the impact. But once things begin to visibly progress, the opposite feeling kicks in and everything starts to feel like it’s happening so quickly. All the team’s hard work comes to fruition and that’s just really rewarding." Approaching completion later this year, the 17th Avenue SE extension will forge an important pedestrian and vehicle link between new and existing mixed-use development on either side of Macleod Trail. At the same time, transit users will have access to a much more modern, safe, and accessible LRT station. "What’s exciting about this year is the moment it all comes together, and people finally get to see what that means for their experience in The C+E.” As a personal highlight, Ashton is looking forward to shifting gears this summer and spending more time camping and enjoying water activities with her family now that her two kids are old enough join in the fun. • At CMLC, our IDEAS (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, Sustainability) commitments are the foundation of everything we do. Our dedicated Accessibility, Sustainability, and DE&I committees ensure continuous progress in leadership, learning, growth, and best practices across all focus areas. In celebration of Canadian Multiculturalism Day, we proudly spotlight our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DE&I) Committee. This diverse team, representing a wide range of experiences and backgrounds, meets monthly to champion DE&I initiatives across five strategic priority areas: -Commitment to education -Recruitment & procurement -Fostering a diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace -Connecting with underserved communities within CMLC’s domain -Mentoring & championing talent The DE&I initiatives aim to deepen our understanding of diverse experiences and ensure that the perspectives of underrepresented groups are valued and integrated both in our workplace and within the communities we build. As part of our commitment to education, this year the DE&I committee has hosted a range of guest speakers covering a variety of topics, including Cheryl Foggo during Black History Month to Matteo Jumasian from the Centre for Sexuality. Other committee highlights include the adoption of procurement practices that promote, advance, and enable a diverse talent and the development and dissemination of an inclusive language guide that fosters amore equitable, respectful and effective communication environment. This week, in celebration of Canadian Multiculturalism Day, the DE&I committee hosted a potluck. Team members were invited to bring a dish with special cultural significance and share it with their colleagues. Food is a powerful way to share stories and traditions. This third annual event fosters an environment where everyone feels valued and included, celebrates the rich tapestry of cultures within our organization, and reinforces CMLC’s commitment to DE&I. We are humbled today to announce a transformational gift by David Werklund, Hon. LLD, CM, AOE and family to support Arts Commons Transformation (ACT): $75 million, the largest philanthropic gift to the performing arts in Canadian history. Dave Werklund’s generosity, community spirit, and ingenuity will have a lasting impact on the city of Calgary, far beyond the arts. With immense gratitude for this historic donation, Arts Commons will invest the $75 million gift towards construction costs, create the Dave Werklund Education Wing, as well as establish four funds to support the sustainability of the following institutional priorities: education, accessibility, operations, and an ongoing endowment to rename Arts Commons as Werklund Centre in perpetuity, starting in the 2025-26 season. “Dave's breathtaking contribution to Arts Commons Transformation will not only transform our city, but it will cement the legacy of the Werklunds as city-builders, dedicated to strengthening our community through the arts for generations to come.” - Arts Commons President and CEO Alex Sarian Learn more about ACT: https://lnkd.in/gAC_ujAR
