  • CNL’s world leading expertise in radiobiology and low dose radiation research is helping advance understanding of health risks associated with radiation exposure during spaceflights. So, no surprise that we’re looking forward to next week’s Canadian Space Health Research Network's Space Health Research Symposium! And we're very pleased to share that CNL’s Marcelo E. Vazquez, MD, Ph.D. will be chairing a special panel for the #nextgen on advancing their own space radiation research careers.   #studentlearning #space #lowdoseresearch

Are you a trainee or early career investigator? We have prepared a special event just for you! 💫 Introducing "How to build a career in space radiation research" chaired and moderated by Dr. Marcelo Vazquez from the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, Canada. 🎙️ Share your research with the space health community! • Our team over at the Gentilly-1 (G-1) Waste Management Facility recently accomplished a major milestone; successfully and safely removing the Moderator Purification System Tank from the Spent Resin Storage System near the G-1 Reactor Building. Specialized equipment was developed to safely extract the tank while minimizing risk to personnel and the environment. This significant step has brought us much closer to our decommissioning goals for the facility.   A huge thank you and congratulations to the G-1 team for a job well done! #SafetyFirst #Decommissioning #G1

The 2024 Women in Nuclear Canada Conference was a testament to the power of collaboration. Over 70 representatives from various teams within CNL joined hundreds of industry experts to explore groundbreaking ideas and share valuable insight at #WiN2024. It was an incredible time of learning, inspiration, and collective action. Dialogue and strategies surrounding the role of nuclear science in "Empowering Change for a Clean Energy Future" were at the forefront of this year's conference. Jessica Sheardown also shared insight on how CNL works to repatriate low burn-up and highly enriched uranium and how this strategy can help us explore new ways to manage spent fuel in Canada. This unique event hosted well-rounded groups of attendees, including women and male allies making valuable contributions to the nuclear industry through their roles in STEM, skilled trades and as Nuclear professionals. CNL is proud to support Women in Nuclear Canada and to be a sponsor of this important event. Thank you to the organizers and everyone who attended the conference. Here’s to a growing and collaborative nuclear future! AECL #WiNCanada

  • “This is just the beginning. The purpose of this MOU is not just to explore possibilities but to bring possibilities to life. This is about Jamaica exploring technology, embracing technology for its economic development and it starts with finding partners like our partners in Canada.” Prime Minister, Dr. the Most Hon. Andrew Holness -- Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) are pleased to announce that they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Government of Jamaica to cooperate on nuclear science and technology. The MOU strengthens what has been a growing relationship between the two nations, which has included a visit to the AECL Chalk River Laboratories last October from Andrew Holness, Jamaica’s Prime Minister, members of his cabinet and leading government officials responsible for the country’s clean energy portfolio. Jamaica is the first Member State of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to establish an independent nuclear regulatory body and is home to the Caribbean's only nuclear reactor — the 20 kW SLOWPOKE research reactor, designed by AECL, located at the University of West Indies, Mona campus. With the new agreement in place, and in accordance with existing bilateral arrangements between Canada and Jamaica, the organizations are poised to collaborate across a wide range of nuclear fields to pursue economic development, reduce emissions, and advance innovative technologies related to public health, waste management and environmental sciences.

  • CNL began the 2024 #NuclearScienceWeek festivities at the Petawawa Ramble on Sunday, October 20, where we had exciting science games, pumpkin decorating, nuclear science demonstrations and loads of fun activities for the kids. CNL is proud to be an event sponsor, and we were thrilled to play a part in fueling #STEM curiosity in the kids at the Ramble. Thanks to the town of Petawawa for their efforts in organizing this event and to all the parents who brought their families to join in the fall fun and learn about Nuclear science! As #NuclearSciweek activities continue, we have pop-up displays in our various local communities, including Deep River, Chalk River, Pembroke, and Petawawa, as well as our White Shell and Port Hope sites. Visit a pop-up in your local community centres and arenas, and stop by the library pop-ups to learn about nuclear science and for free copies of the CNL Contact and Kids Contact magazines!
