“Placemaking is the practice of transforming (public) space into a vibrant and accessible place that enhances quality of life, social cohesion, economic value, and the cultural health of the area. It involves designing and activating spaces with the people who use them.” For placemaking to be recognized as a transformational practice, it must first be understood. Developed collaboratively with practitioners, urban-focused professional networks, not-forprofit organizations, academic experts, placemaking consultants, curators, city staff, and many others, CUI’s latest publication offers a new definition of placemaking, synthesized from 21+ diverse and active definitions. In a celebration of what practitioners across Canada and North America have accomplished, Let’s Talk About Placemaking opens the door to spark dialogue and action that orients placemaking as a cornerstone of Canada’s urban development. Hudson's Bay Company, which occupies significant real estate in downtowns and main streets across Canada, may soon be forced to shutter its big department stores. This news, along with the impact tariffs are expected to have on local economies, provides an opportunity to reimagine these critical spaces and being open to mixed uses, says CUI CEO Mary W. Rowe.
