Today, we feature the Montreal Climate Security Summit speaker Commodore Ruud Schoonen, Assistant Chief of Staff Strategic Plans & Policy at NATO HQ Allied Command Transformation. Commodore Schoonen serves at NATO HQ Allied Command Transformation. He joined the Royal Netherlands Navy in 1989 and has extensive operational experience, beginning as a mine hunting officer on HNLMS Middelburg and progressing through various roles on multiple frigates. After qualifying as a Principal Warfare Officer/Navigator in 1998, he commanded HNLMS De Zeven Provinciën during a deployment to the Indian Ocean for OP ATALANTA. In his current role, he focuses on strategic planning and policy development, shaping future military strategies and enhancing operational effectiveness. At the Summit on Oct. 30, he will join the closing plenary, "Strategic Foresight: Anticipating the Future of Climate Security" which delves into the vital needs and opportunities for climate foresight and intelligence, focusing on how to better anticipate risks and integrate strategy and policy effectively. Today’s Montreal Climate Security Summit Spotlight Speaker is General Tom Middendorp (retired), Chairman of the International Military Council on Climate and Security and former Chief of Defense of the Netherlands. General Middendorp served as the Chief of Defense of the Netherlands for five and a half years, dedicating 38 years to military service. He commanded troops at all levels, led a multinational task force in Afghanistan, and participated in over twenty military missions as Director of Operations. His experience has given him deep insights into geopolitical dynamics and the impact of climate change as a risk multiplier. In retirement, General Middendorp founded the International Military Council on Climate and Security (IMCCS), a global network of security experts and research institutes from over 40 countries. At the Summit on Oct. 30, General Middendorp will present a keynote address followed by a Q&A.
