Abstract: Life is full is complex decisions, and the mining business is no exception. We’ve learned from behavioral science that everyone is prone to cognitive biases that can get in the way of making good decisions, but most of us received no formal training in decision making during our schooling. Further, many mining professionals may not be aware of how decision science can be applied to organizations to align project teams and stakeholders, deal with uncertainty and increase clarity and confidence for decision makers. Taking a more structured approach to decision making mitigates biases and minimizes costly re-work. Much of this approach is a conceptually intuitive but applying it at an organizational level is art as well as science. Systematic application of decision science to improve organizational decision quality has created significant value for our peers in the energy sector but has only been sporadically applied in mining. What are we missing out on? Teck Resources has been progressively piloting and implementing components of the decision quality toolkit and learning from the experience of companies in other sectors such as energy, pharmaceuticals and technology to adapt their proven tools and approaches to our industry and our specific organizational culture. These applications have generated significant value at low cost by helping leverage the creativity of project teams, identify blind spots and manage uncertainty Follow CIM Vancouver to stay up to date on all our upcoming monthly events. #mining #cimvancouver #cim #vancouver
