Updates

  • Through a community partnership between us, Waterloo Regional Police Service, Wilfrid Laurier University, University of Waterloo, Conestoga College and Region of Waterloo Paramedic Services, we have been working to address the unsafe and disruptive behaviour of the large unsanctioned street gatherings and nuisance parties that have occurred around St. Patrick’s Day. The Ontario Superior Court of Justice granted our application for an injunction order for St. Patrick’s Day weekend this year. This means that anyone attending, hosting, creating, sponsoring or permitting a Nuisance Party or unsanctioned street gathering, or otherwise violating the City’s nuisance bylaw could be arrested, detained and held in custody by the police, and charged with violating a court order. "This injunction is an additional tool to help us prevent and address dangerous unsanctioned street gatherings in Waterloo,” said Nicole Papke, Director of Municipal Enforcement for the City of Waterloo. “On top of tickets and fines, there are now additional significant legal consequences for gathering. We hope that this shows students and others that we are serious about their safety. We want to emphasize how important it is to the City and the community that they find other ways to celebrate responsibly without tying up crucial public safety resources.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gyUdxtZS

  • Each year, community members in Waterloo roll up their sleeves and celebrate Earth Day by picking up little from parks and trails. It's one way to show support for the environment, while freshening up greenspaces in time for spring. This community effort isn't just about tidying up - it helps to foster pride in our shared spaces, supports local wildlife and shows care to the environment. Want to get pitch in? Gather your coworkers, friends and family and organize a cleanup! We'll support you every step of the way and provide the supplies, tips and help you dispose of the collected litter. • Our Artists in Neighbourhoods program is one of the ways we support collaborative community art, where professional artists and neighbours work together to create something magical. With up to $5,000 of funding available per project, this program helps to foster neighbourhood connection while showcasing the talent of local artists. Last year, artist Agnes Niewiadomski worked with neighbours on the 'Gathering Space', a public art piece at Brighton Park in Waterloo. The piece weaved together locally foraged materials to create a beautiful decorative wall. In addition to public art, the funding can also be used for community-based performances, the publication of a collaborative written piece, a sign based project.. the options are endless! • Each year, we run a Council for a Day contest to help kids to learn about municipal government, think creatively and share their ideas for making Waterloo even better. We've heard some great ideas like creating playgrounds that are fun for the whole family or having more community gardens in high need areas. The contest helps kids develop civic awareness, public speaking, and leadership skills—all while having fun! Winners will spend the day with the Mayor and serve as Councillor for a day. If you know a Grade 5 student who has great ideas, encourage them to apply! All they have to do is tell us their one idea for making Waterloo a better place to live, play or go to school. Contest closes April 6, 2025. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gSUqx-wu

Our shared vision for Waterloo is to be a leader in sustainability and a future-ready community for all. To make sure we get it right, we're having on-going conversations with the people who live, work and study here. One of the ways we're doing that is through Community Conversations, which are opportunities for staff, Council and community members to connect, chat and collaborate bring the City's plan to life. The next Community Conversation will be on Sunday, March 9 at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex. It'll be an hour of free indoor skating, hot chocolate and meaningful discussions about the Waterloo we all want to live in. Everyone is welcome, and we’re especially eager to hear from youth about how they envision the future of our city. 🗓️ March 9 from 3 to 4 p.m. 📍 Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex All are welcome.
