🌎 On this International Day for Climate Action, we’re spotlighting the incredible climate impact of low-carbon district energy at the Burnaby Mountain District Energy Utility. Since its inception in 2020, the BMDEU’s Renewable Energy Centre has helped Simon Fraser University reduce its Burnaby campus carbon footprint by 85% (11,600 tonnes of CO2 annually), allowing SFU to exceed its provincially-mandated goal – a 40% reduction of GHG emissions by 2025 – years ahead of schedule. The Renewable Energy Centre transforms clean wood waste (biomass), once destined for landfills, into a low-carbon energy source to provide heat and hot water to most of SFU’s Burnaby campus and the UniverCity residential community. The energy from biomass replaces the use of natural gas and provides 86.5% of the total heating requirements for the campus. In addition, Corix and SFU’s Facilities Services continually work together to increase the efficiency of the SFU campus heating system to reduce SFU's use of natural gas for heating. For the 12-month period of September 2023 to August 2024, the teams have achieved an additional reduction of over 30,000 GJ of natural gas compared to the same period the year before –pushing the annual GHG reduction to closer to 90% for 2024. We’re thrilled to officially announce our Bellingham District Energy Utility is now LIVE! Developed in partnership with the Port of Bellingham, the BDEU delivers low-carbon heating and cooling to the Downtown Waterfront District and is helping transform the long-vacant, former pulp mill site into a thriving mixed-use community. The BDEU captures waste heat from Puget Sound Energy’s Encogen Generating Station to provide reliable, affordable, low-carbon heating and cooling to ~200,000 square feet of residential and commercial space and will expand over time to service 1.6 million square feet. With heating and cooling buildings accounting for a significant portion of global carbon emissions, more cities and communities like Bellingham are looking to district energy as a proven approach to decarbonize buildings. 👉 Check out the recently upgraded Interim Energy Centres - part of the exciting City Centre District Energy Utility project in Richmond, BC. In partnership with the City of Richmond's Lulu Island Energy Company (LIEC) and Canada Infrastructure Bank/ Banque de l'infrastructure du Canada, we're pleased to announce the completion of essential upgrades to the Interim Energy Centres in the Oval area as part of LIEC's City Centre District Energy Utility (CCDEU). These upgrades are essential to meet the growing district energy heating demands from the community, new developments and our customers. The upgrades include the addition of a new high-efficiency, ultra-low NOx, 3.5MW boiler, pumping upgrades and other critical retrofit works. The upgraded Interim Energy Centres have an expanded capacity of 14MW and have been delivering reliable and resilient heating energy to 14 developments in the Oval Village area since early 2024. With tremendous growth projected in CCDEU, we are excited for several upcoming projects in development, including the implementation of a large-scale Sewer Heat Recovery Central Energy Plant that will provide low-carbon energy for CCDEU. Construction of the plant will begin next year and is expected to be operational in 2028. We're also preparing for construction of two more Interim Energy Centres, and district energy piping networks in the Oval West and Capstan areas - all expected to be operational within the next 2 years. 🌲 Many hands make light work! Last week, our team rolled up our sleeves to plant 150 native trees and shrubs at Hazelnut Meadows Community Park in Surrey, BC in partnership with Tree Canada / Arbres Canada and the City of Surrey's Urban Forestry team. It was an incredible morning reconnecting with each other and with nature, while taking steps to build a sustainable future. Ensuring strong environmental stewardship is one of the ways we connect with our communities, and by planting trees we’re helping to grow resilient ecosystems for generations to come. #CommunityImpact #TeamBuilding #Sustainability #EnergythatInspires
