Yesterday, we had the privilege of touring the New Roads Recovery Centre in Victoria, BC. This long-term residential treatment facility serves adult men dealing with mental health, acute and chronic substance use issues, prioritizing those who have experienced homelessness or have been involved with the criminal justice system. New Roads offers a 9 to 24-month program with an integrated treatment approach. The program supports the whole person, aiding in their recovery journey and assisting with future housing, employment, and social needs. Services include on-site nursing and physician care, as well as individual and group counseling. Excitingly, they are also building a section for women, set to open soon. We were honoured to attend the Hungry Hearts Gala this past Saturday, hosted by Our Place Society at the Delta Ocean Pointe Resort. The event featured eight of Victoria’s top chefs and over 250 community leaders, all raising funds for a new initiative—the first long-term women’s addiction recovery community on Vancouver Island, set to open this winter. Proud to support such an amazing cause, thank you for having us. #hungryhearts #ourplacesociety #courtnallsociety #community #support #charity #gala

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. According to Statistics Canada, approximately 12 people die by suicide each day, totalling around 4,500 deaths per year. Suicide rates are approximately 3 times higher among men compared to women, and it's the second leading cause of death among youth and young adults (15-34 years). These numbers are more than just statistics; they represent individuals, families, and communities affected by the profound loss of a loved one. But behind these numbers lies hope – hope that by spreading awareness, breaking the silence, and fostering supportive environments, we can prevent suicides and save lives. You may see some of these posters around town in Victoria, BC. September marks National Suicide Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness and take action to prevent the tragedy of suicide. It's a reminder that discussing mental health openly and compassionately can save lives. Suicide is a serious issue, but it's not inevitable. With the right support and care, many suicides can be prevented. That's why it's crucial to break the silence, eliminate stigma, and encourage those in need to seek support without fear or judgment. By fostering open conversations and providing resources, we can create a supportive environment where individuals feel empowered to reach out when they need it most. Together, let's raise awareness, show compassion, and support one another. Your voice matters, and you are never alone.
