Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. According to Statistics Canada, approximately 12 people die by suicide each day, totalling around 4,500 deaths per year. Suicide rates are approximately 3 times higher among men compared to women, and it's the second leading cause of death among youth and young adults (15-34 years). These numbers are more than just statistics; they represent individuals, families, and communities affected by the profound loss of a loved one. But behind these numbers lies hope – hope that by spreading awareness, breaking the silence, and fostering supportive environments, we can prevent suicides and save lives. 9 Australians die by suicide every single day. This has a ripple effect across communities and it is estimated nearly half the population has been affected by suicide. Today is World Suicide Prevention Day and this year’s theme, "We All Have a Role to Play,” promotes the message that everyone can contribute to suicide prevention. How many meaningful conversations do you have with people about suicide? Unfortunately, many of us don't until after someone has taken their own life. Today is a reminder to talk about this important topic. Together, we can make a difference by supporting those impacted and starting the conversation that could save lives. September 10th is World Suicide Prevention Day, 2024—a day established by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to focus attention on suicide, reduce stigma, and raise awareness. The message is clear: suicides are preventable. Gender-based vulnerabilities, like gender-based violence, significantly impact suicidal behavior, especially among women. Intersectionality also plays a role, with some sub-groups of women, such as Indigenous women and those experiencing homelessness, facing higher risks. In 2023, 143 women in Alberta lost their lives to suicide, and women are 1.5-2 times more likely to attempt suicide and be hospitalized than men. However, 3 out of every 4 suicide deaths in Alberta are men. This year, the IASP’s 2024-2026 campaign calls us to “Start the Conversation.” Let’s shift from silence to openness, understanding, and support. If you or someone you know needs immediate crisis support, contact Distress Centre Calgary's crisis line at 403-266-4357, available by phone or text. Additionally, YW Calgary provides counseling services for those in need. Let’s start the conversation and make a difference. #WorldSuicidePreventionDay #EndTheStigma #StartTheConversation #YWCalgary #DistressCentreCalgary

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. This global day brings people together to reduce stigma, push for policy changes, encourage seeking help, and honour those lost to suicide, survivors, and those grieving. ➕ Over 7 million adults in Australia are close to someone who has died by suicide or attempted suicide. ➕ By age 25, 1 in 2 young people are affected. ➕ Suicide was the 15th leading cause of death. ➕ Men are three times more likely to die by suicide than women ➕ Indigenous Australians die by suicide at twice the rate of non-Indigenous Australians. We believe that everyone can help prevent suicide—not just on World Suicide Prevention Day, but every day.

*Trigger Warning* Suicide. Glasgow Times published the latest suicide stats yesterday for Scotland and it's not pretty. Ongoing trends show that those in the most deprived areas are much more likely to die by suicide than those in the least deprived areas. A lot more men dying by suicide too, and, sadly, the numbers for 2023 have increased since 2022. Everyone is affected by suicide in some way. The impact ripples across families, communities, and we all have a duty to take action. We can't wait until someone dies to say, 'Oh that's awful'. We need to start talking now. LeNoury et al RIAT analysis of study 329, 2015, identified 10 ways in which industry hides or minimises adverse event reporting: -use of an idiosyncratic coding system -failure to transcribe all adverse events from clinical record to adverse event database -filtering data on adverse events through statistical techniques -restriction of reporting to events that ocurred above a given frequency in any one group -coding events under different headings for different patients (dilution) -grouping of adverse events -insufficient consideration of severity -coding of relatedness to study medication -masking effects of concomitant drugs -ignoring effects of drug withdrawal
