Recognizing and reducing preventable harm to patients is a key focus for #CanadianPatientSafetyWeek. Did you know that there is a TAHSN Quality Improvement Community of Practice (QIPS CoP) workstream that collectively works to ensure patient safety is prioritized? The Improving Patient Safety workstream is a place where organizations can work collaboratively, engage and connect with peers to discuss pertinent topics. October 28th to November 1st is #CanadianPatientSafetyWeek. This year’s theme is focused on understanding healthcare harm. We’re reflecting on what healthcare harm is, how and why it happens, who it impacts and how. Join us on November 19th for the Annual CQuIPS Symposium where one of our workshops will explore our understanding of patient harm as a domain of safety with a panel of leaders and national experts. Beyond physical harm, patients can experience emotional, psychological, cultural, and social harm as a result of the care they receive. By learning from these diverse experiences of patient harm, we can inform targeted improvement efforts and enhance overall patient safety. Advancing health equity is a key pillar in improving quality. The Quality Improvement Experiential Student Training program (QuEST) and one of it’s notable projects “Closing the gap on healthcare quality for equity-deserving groups: a scoping review of equity-focused quality improvement interventions in medicine” was recently highlighted in an article by the University of Toronto’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine, “Making health care quality improvement more equitable”. The article underscores the study’s focus on how quality improvement work impacts equity-seeking groups and touches on how inadvertent health disparities can come of interventions that may exclude some groups. Today, September 17, is #WorldPatientSafetyday (https://lnkd.in/gEmXAhKf). The theme for this year is Improving diagnosis for patient safety, which is focused on improving health outcomes with accurate and timely diagnosis. CQuIPS is proud to be a partner organization of the Patient-Partnered Diagnostic Centre for Excellence (PPDCE). PPDCE works with patients as partners to improve diagnosis and diagnostic safety with a focus on identifying and preventing errors and finding solutions to build resilience for safer care. CQuIPS team members have supported these efforts by engaging in research activities and serving on the PPDCE advisory committee. Professor, Department of Medicine, Director at Centre for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (CQuIPS), University of Toronto
On September 19, 2024, the Centre for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (CQuIPS) undergoes a 5-year academic review. As part of this review, we prepared a self-study report, chronicling the work that we have led between 2020-2024. The self-study reflects the growing impact that we have had as a valued health system partner, our expanded academic portfolio related to QI with an emphasis on equity and health system resilience, and the efforts that we have undertaken to nurture a vibrant QIPS community across the Toronto Academic Health Science Network. I am extremely proud of the work that our team at CQuIPS, along with our members, alumni and broader community have led. I am also very grateful for all of the support that we have received, particularly from our partner organizations, including the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, Sunnybrook, The Hospital for Sick Children and Women's College Hospital.
