Last week, our CML Showcase featured several undergraduate and graduate student critical design and creative writing projects from the past year. We had poetry readings and project demos at the Communitech Hub, with refreshments and socializing to wrap up the spring term. Congratulations to our students on their hard work! About us
The Critical Media Lab (CML) is a cross-disciplinary, research-creation initiative developed in the English Department at the University of Waterloo. The CML fosters the creation of new media projects that explore the impact of technology on society and the human condition. It was launched quietly on campus in the fall of 2008, before occupying various locations in the city of Kitchener, Ontario. The CML is currently located in the Communitech Hub, at 151 Charles Street West.

On Monday June 24, experts from across Waterloo's campus at the Library, Writing Centre, Centre for Teaching and Learning, Centre for Extended Learning, and the Departments of English and Communication Arts shared their perspectives on Teaching Writing After Generative AI. Joined by special guest Kyle Jensen, Director of the Writing Program at Arizona State University, panelists and participants had the opportunity to discuss and reflect on approaches to engaging generative AI in writing classrooms. Thank you to all who joined us! We are collating the workshop results and look forward to sharing them to support instructors across University of Waterloo soon!

AI companies are pushing Ottawa for exemption from copyright law. The creative community is not happy, and with reason. Be wary of how these companies justify their case. Here's an example from Microsoft: “It is not a copyright infringement to learn from copyright-protected works, and the use of AI to read and learn should not require compensation." Using words like "read" and "learn" to describe machine processes does not justify the theft of creative property by the humans who own the machines. If AI companies want artistic content to feed their machines and increase wealth asymmetry across the globe, they should have to pay heavily in ways that support artists. If AI can learn and read and be trained, maybe it can also pay -- as in pay the CBC and Canada Council for the Arts a huge cut of its profits.

I'm grateful to the Globe and Mail for picking up this short essay on the politics of accelerating AI adoption. At the end of the day, GenAI is not about art or science -- it's a product of economics. Reposted on Medium for the paywall-averse: https://lnkd.in/gJb7aKEh

I'm thrilled to see the CML in focus for the Journal of Responsible Innovation. Alexi Orchard, first author, is an outstanding collaborator. Anyone looking for the best talent in RI, Tech for Good, tech ethics, tech communication, or research across disciplines would be fortunate to have Alexi on their team.
Our newest article is out in the Journal of Responsible Innovation! I'm very excited to formally share some of the research we've done at the Critical Media Lab on responsible innovation and critical design over the last few years. If you have been in one of our many workshops or critical design courses, we are so grateful for your participation and willingness to think and design critically with us. A big thanks also goes to my co-author Marcel O'Gorman 😀 https://lnkd.in/g7Q6Xw8f
