NET-ZERO - OUR PART Recently, I had the opportunity to take part in the Niagara Region Waste Survey. Like many places around the world, Niagara is working toward the ambitious goal of reducing its carbon footprint to net-zero by 2050. The Region is seeking community input on how to get there, exploring ideas like education, improved collection methods, and anaerobic digestion plants. I applaud their efforts because, let’s face it, this is a monumental task that will take a serious investment to realize. Achieving net-zero means balancing the amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) produced with the amount removed from the atmosphere. It’s a massive challenge, but one that can be met with collaboration. The World Resources Institute notes that reaching net-zero requires a complete transformation—from how we power our economies to how we transport people and goods. While governments and corporations play a big role, we all have a part to play. Small changes like fuel switching, diverting food waste, and even planting trees can help. A GREENER FUTURE Methane, is a greenhouse gas 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide that traps heat and contributes significantly to global warming. THE POWER OF A QUESTION: INSPIRING ACTION The power of a timely question can change your trajectory. In the 1990s, Ray Anderson, founder of Interface Inc. (carpet and tile), experienced a "lightning bolt" moment. When asked, "What's your company doing for the environment?" he realized he had no answer. These are truly impressive actions in an industry that is otherwise known to be environmentally damaging. Anderson's story reminds us that it often takes one moment of realization to ignite lasting change. DIVERTING FOOD WASTE FROM LANDFILLS Diverting waste from landfills is a vital step towards a cleaner, more sustainable future. By finding better uses for waste, we not only help reduce the burden on landfills but also contribute to a cleaner air, water and soil. That helps everyone. One of the innovative ways Davidson Environmental accomplishes this is by processing organic waste so it can be used in biogas facilities. This contributes to a circular economy where the waste is re-purposed at every step from creating biofuel to using the residual bi-product as fertilizer. THE DIFFERENCE IT MAKES Research shows that 2.5 kg of food waste can generate 1 m³ of biogas, equivalent to about 6 kWh of energy. For the average Canadian family, diverting organic waste could generate 200 kWh per year—enough for 22 loads of laundry, 20 hours of TV, or 400 slices of toast! At Davidson Environmental, we make this process easy and odor-free for businesses with our switch-out bin service, swapping fresh bins for filled bins regularly. A DOZEN WAYS TO REDUCE MICRO-PLASTICS All materials break down over time including plastics. Rather than breaking down into biodegradable matter, plastics break down into long-lingering fragments called micro-plastics. These can be shed from: plastic waste weathered by the elements, washing clothes, glitter, cosmetics, carpets, paint, furniture, and even your car tires. Our environment is therefore flooded with micro-plastics. They are found in several different foods including fish and seafood, table salt, beer, honey and sugar, and tap water. Consequently we ingest a credit card’s worth of plastic every week. It should be no surprise that micro-plastics are being found in human blood, organs and tissue. Initial research shows they directly impact respiratory, reproductive, cognitive functions and cause inflammation throughout the body. Clearly, we need to make significant changes to contain micro-plastic contamination. HERE ARE 12 TIPS for limiting microplastics in the environment and in your body: 1. Use reusable natural fiber shopping bags rather than plastic or synthetic fiber ones 2. Buy organic clothes free from synthetic polymers and plastics 3. Make the most of plastic free cosmetics like reusable makeup wipes 4. Swap your shower gels and shampoos for plastic free, sustainable bars 5. Use eco-friendly alternatives to clingfilm and don’t microwave food in plastic 6. Air dry your clothes 7. Buy fruit and veg in home-compostable, recyclable paper or reusable fabric bags 8. Get bread and pastries in paper bags (and put an end to single-use plastic containers!) 9. Carry a reusable water bottle and coffee cup with you to avoid takeaway cups 10. Store food in plastic free containers (like ones made of glass or metal) 11. Use micro-fiber filters and laundry bags to prevent microplastics from entering wastewater 12.
