If the evidence is so compelling, why isn’t there more investment and focus on public spaces? And, how do we move to action? I recently had the opportunity to join a panel with two experts on the health and wellbeing benefits of great public spaces at the Evergreen Canada Conference. Eileen De Villa and Kate Mulligan covered the compelling evidence of the impact of public spaces have on enhancing community health and wellbeing. I layered in the perspective of how to move from “knowing” to “doing”— both within government and with community. There is significant opportunity to unlock government investment (while also better utilizing private sector dollars) across the health, community and social service, and infrastructure sectors. By thinking about the impact of public spaces in these areas, we can create well-packaged, integrated solutions and make better use of health, housing, and education investment. The key, however, is to ensure these investments lead to solutions that have been designed with the public, have strong government support, and a market to best mobilize the private sector where possible. And we also need to think about how people, whether in community or government, make decisions. At Davis Pier Consulting, our expertise is in helping government do better, smarter things and we’re always happy to talk about it.

This month was a big one for our partners at Evergreen Canada and we are fortunate to be along for the ride. We soaked up the 2024 Evergreen Conference, delivered a workshop on measuring the impact of public space, and got people thinking about different approaches to cross-sector collaboration and unlocking investment. A big shout out to the team at Evergreen for another inspiring and action-oriented opportunity to connect and further the case for place.

The Government of Prince Edward Island is reviewing their AccessAbility Supports Program to ensure it is supporting residents living with disabilities and providing access to the supports they need to reach their full potential. And what better way to do that than to engage people in the process! Our team is grateful to be partnering with the Department of Social Development & Seniors on this important work—and to bring our expertise and depth of experience in the disability support sector to contribute to meaningful outcomes for people on Prince Edward Island. The Evergreen Conference is coming up and a few of our own will be presenting and participating in conference panels. First up, Ilse van Winssen and Raquel Rosas, PhD will be presenting our work with Evergreen Canada to measure the impact of public spaces on subjective wellbeing. We know that green public spaces can improve health, climate resilience, and economic development in communities—and we’re proud to partner with Evergreen on developing a measurement tool that will contribute to their efforts to build the case for place at Evergreen Brick Works and beyond. Tickets to the conference are still available. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gSdUssmr #EvergreenConference #MeasuringImpact #Wellbeing

Just two Mikes from Dartmouth talking inclusive economic growth! We were thrilled to host the fireside chat with Mayor Mike Savage at the Economic Club of Canada's event last week. Halifax is attracting record numbers of people and businesses while working to address the challenges of growth and prioritize people, planet, and prosperity. We talked about Halifax’s shift from stagnation to growth, how the city is working to address this, and the role the private sector in contributing to inclusive and sustainable solutions. As Mayor Mike approaches the end of his third term and prepares to step down, what a fantastic opportunity to celebrate him and the strides Halifax has made under his leadership on a national stage.
