Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Poverty. We have always said that poverty is a government policy choice. No amount of food banks or homeless shelters will get rid of food insecurity or housing insecurity. Today, we're highlighting the financial reality of people with disabilities. Did you know that people with disabilities generally live 30% below the poverty line in Canada? Thirty percent. Disability should never mean living in poverty. Period. This alarming situation calls for collective action to build a more inclusive society, where everyone, including people disabilities, has access to a decent standard of living. Together, let's make our voices heard to eliminate poverty and ensure that everyone is heard! #BetterTheBenefit #EndDisabilityPoverty

We are grassroots based, independently funded and led by disabled people. We want a Canada Disability Benefit now!
About us
Disability Without Poverty is a Cross-Disability Led, Grassroots, independently funded movement focused on the following three objectives: Mobilize Our Voice and Power As disabled people, we have to make sure we are involved in all stages of securing a Disability Benefit from design to legislation to implementation. That means we develop a shared vision and achieve consensus on tough questions rather than letting the government decide. It also means we ensure the Disability Benefit receives the support of every political party and every Premier. Shape the Disability Benefit We want to make sure the Canada Disability Benefit significantly reduces disability poverty. That means learning everything we can about what a potential Disability Benefit could look like. We are working with economists and policy experts to help us identify key design features. We are exploring different models. We are determined to find the quickest way to get a new monthly Disability Benefit into the bank accounts hands of disabled Canadians. Secure public support for ending disability poverty We won’t end poverty for people with disabilities without the support of every Canadian. That means working with disabled artists to get the attention and capture the hearts of all Canadians. It also means being active on social media, in mainstream media, recruiting thought leaders and champions and doing public opinion polling. Your engagement is paramount for success. Together we’ll ensure the Canada Disability Benefit remains a national priority. Your contribution is welcome no matter how small or big.

New podcast episode today! Episode 3 has dropped ! Our guest today is Elizabeth Lowe, one of our board members. Liz is a writer, a poet, and a lover of languages who lives with cerebral palsy. Liz spotlights the challenges of living with an invisible disability: dyspraxia. It's a condition that makes simple tasks time-consuming and tiring. This episode is an honest look at the struggles of some disabled folks whose disability cannot be detected at the outset, maybe because they don't use a wheelchair all the time or because they don't fall under ill-informed stereotypes or categories. We have a shared responsibility to learn, reflect and to take action. We acknowledge the historical and present day impacts of colonization and recognize that poverty and gender inequality are interwoven with colonization, oppression and genocide. Our offices are closed today in observance of the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. #OrangeShirtDay2024 #NDTR2024

Having a disability should never mean living in legislated poverty. Canada should be ashamed for making access to #MAiD easier than affordable accessible housing or social benefits that would permit folks with disabilities to afford basic necessities such as medication, food and housing. #AidNotMAiD #EndDisabilityPoverty
On CBC Canada Tonight, Krista Carr, Executive Vice President of Inclusion Canada, outlines more details on today's court Charter challenge against #MAiD Track 2. Together with Indigenous Disability Canada, DAWN Canada, and the Council of Canadians with Disabilities, we are calling for a repeal to Track 2 of Canada’s #MAiD law. #PWD deserve support to live, not assistance to die. Let’s put an end to this discriminatory law. See full video 👇 https://lnkd.in/eARUXxU4
