Designing Ambitious Structures.
About us
With more than 100 national and international awards, Fast + Epp has established a reputation for fresh thinking. We are passionate about collaborating and exploring with architects, are enthusiastic about our work and enjoy the challenges we face. Established in 1985, our firm has been involved with an extensive variety of public and private projects. Whether it is residential, commercial, institutional, or transit projects - all attest to our commitment to clever, practical design with meticulous attention to detail. Fast + Epp is a 150+ person strong firm that is fluent in all primary structural materials. We have become very adept at combining materials to form architecturally expressive structures and strive to add value whenever possible by having structural components do more than simply support loads – also doubling as acoustic elements, concealing mechanical/electrical components, serving as thermal mass and enhancing aesthetics. With our head office in Vancouver and branch offices in Toronto, New York and Seattle, our project reach has extended to North America, Asia and Europe. Our Darmstadt and Stuttgart offices in Germany office enable us to cross-pollinate the best ideas Europe and North America offer up.

Last month, members of the PNE Freedom Mobile Arch team from Fast + Epp and EllisDon, visited the Nordic Structures shop to review the manufacturing process of the glulam arches. Operating out of Northern Quebec from their manufacturing center in Chibougamau, Nordic are supplying the 60 long span glulam arches, which, upon assembly, will create 80-foot-high arcs that span of 345 feet (105m) from pin to pin. The tour offered a unique opportunity to witness the entire production process, from raw material to finished product. A big thank you to Nordic Structures for hosting us! The arrival of these timber glulam arches on-site is expected shortly, and their installation will give the structure its distinct shape. Vesterheim Commons in Decorah, IA, serves as the signature entrance and event space for the National Norwegian-American Museum and Folk Art School, home to one of the largest collections of Norwegian folk art globally. In collaboration with architects Snohetta and BNIM, and the structural Engineer of Record, MBJ, we contributed our expertise in mass timber and worked together on high level design strategies, using wood to achieve intricate geometries within tight constraints. This project was recognized with a 2024 Wood in Architecture Award by WoodWorks for it's inspired application of mass timber. The use of glue-laminated timber (glulam) beams, columns, panels, and other wood elements resulted in a welcoming and warm space that also aligned with the museum’s sustainability goals. A swooping cantilevered canopy, constructed by combining curved glulam beams with embedded steel, guides visitors into the space. Inside, a wood oculus connects the first two floors, filling the space with natural light. Structural GLT decking further amplifies this illumination while cleverly hiding mechanical systems in the spaces between the panels, ensuring the beautiful wood remains the primary visual attraction. This week marks one year since opening our doors at 119 Spadina Ave in Toronto! Opening this office was a natural next step for our growth in Eastern Canada, and this new chapter has been filled with exciting opportunities - from award-winning projects like Limberlost Place at George Brown College to making strides in advancing sustainable design. A huge thank you to our dedicated team, as well as our clients and partners. We look forward to more innovative projects and continued collaboration in the years ahead. #StructuralEngineers #StructuralDesign

Situated on a hilltop and facing westward at the Crossroads Park in Calgary, the Crossroads Park Pavilion provides a lookout point, capturing the city skyline and the Rocky Mountains beyond. Designed by Dalton Kaun Architecture, the frame of the pavilion is angled to respond to the natural slope of the site, while also directing attention westward toward the view. Constructed with heavy glulam timber, the exterior has been left exposed, while the interior is lightly clad in cedar slats. The connections are minimally exposed to limit distraction from the timber elements, and carefully detailed to shed water and restrict degradation from the weather, while the foundations utilize simple screw piles to mitigate movement in Calgary’s harsh climate. This pavilion will serve as a community hub throughout the seasons, offering venue space for outdoor events. Fast + Epp reposted this
It should come as no surprise that Canada—recent victor of the National Hockey League–hosted 2025 4 Nations Face-Off—is home to more indoor ice rinks than any other country. Nearly 2,900 of them are spread across its 13 provinces and territories—and most of them are, broadly speaking, similar. The typology has experienced little change over the decades. The result? A prevalence of what Paul Fast, principal at Vancouver-based hcma architecture + design, calls “largely dark and cold steel-joint truss structures designed to get people in and out of a sheet of ice as quickly and practically as possible.” “Every Canadian feel it’s their God-given right to be able to go and skate on a sheet of ice,” adds Fast. “This has caused a proliferation of arenas that aren’t always very well thought through for the sake of making them as fast and cheap as possible.” A new public ice arena in the city of Burnaby, just east of Vancouver, aims to shake things up with a fresh take on the indoor rink that foregrounds community. The hcma-designed Rosemary Brown Recreation Centre broke ground in 2019 and finally opened last spring following a bumpy, prolonged construction process. The 92,000-square-foot complex, anchored by a pair of NHL-sized rinks, employs an innovative hybrid steel-timber roof system and that floods the space with daylight without negatively impacting the ice quality. An oversized lobby and rooftop patio, joined by two large, multi-purpose community rooms and an informal children’s play area, help frame the facility as a skate-centric community hub.
