Happy Anniversary to the Tom and Ruth Harkin Center! BNIM and MillerKnoll have continued collaboration with the Harkin Institute following the design of the Tom and Ruth Harkin Center, co-authoring and publishing ALL: The Making of the Tom and Ruth Harkin Center + A Guidebook of Strategies for Inclusive Design (ALL). The publication shares the design process of the Tom and Ruth Harkin Center and provides key strategies to create a unified approach to inclusive design within the larger definition of high-performing sustainable buildings. The second edition of ALL was recently published in spring of 2024. Check out out our most recent edition in the link on the post below!

Two years ago today, we celebrated the official opening of the Tom and Ruth Harkin Center! With the help of our partners at BNIM, our building now serves as a model of inclusion and accessibility. You can learn more about all the details that went into creating the Tom and Ruth Harkin Center here: https://lnkd.in/gZ2rEM9T

At BNIM, we have the challenge of conveying the breadth and complexity of the projects we undertake. Our team is great solving diverse, intricate problems and creating spaces that are both beautiful and highly functional. Then, a project like the LifeServe Blood Center headquarters comes along—a project that truly encapsulates the range of work we do and creative design for unique uses. Recently completed by our Des Moines team, the new building includes: offices, blood donation areas, a 24/7 blood processing lab, and even garages and bays for mobile donation vehicles. This space is designed to support LifeServe’s mission of providing lifesaving blood donations to over 160 hospitals across Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota.

BNIM is a design firm based in Kansas City, Missouri, that has built a national reputation for excellence in architecture, planning, interior design, and landscape architecture. As Dev Malik, BNIM Principal and COO, shares, BNIM leverages technology “to allow us to serve our clients better and more effectively.” ➡️ The Challenge: BNIM used keynotes extensively in Autodesk Revit to reference the specs. However, without a means to track the keynotes placed in the model, this process required tedious coordination. Reviewing every call-off on the drawings with the specs was both time-consuming and not feasible for large projects. With work schedules spanning all hours of the day and night, communication between modelers and specifiers was challenging, and specifier-generated keynotes slowed drawing development. As various Revit modelers selected and created their keynotes, a keynote manager was needed to support multiple users at the same time. Finally, with modeler-generated keynotes, the specifiers needed to be able to track which keynotes were being added to the model to coordinate the specs with the model.  ➡️ The Solution: BNIM imported their keynote master list which is coordinated with the firm’s specification masters into the VisiSpecs Keynote Manager. All Revit users were permitted to select and create keynotes in Keynote Manager so they could have access to the keynotes they needed in a timely fashion. Using Keynote Manager’s filters, the specifier could easily track which keynotes were being used to ensure the specifications matched the keynotes in the project. As additional keynotes were created by the modelers, the specifier could review, edit, and ‘approve’ keynotes in Keynote Manager, ensuring quality and consistency in their product. Comments were also added which enabled team communication on keynotes such as ”Restrooms only.” The ability to run Keynote Manager in Microsoft Word allows keynotes to be easily selected without having to switch back and forth between Keynote Manager and the model in Revit. The VisiSpecs Multi-User Keynote Manager increases efficiency as team members no longer have to wait for their colleagues or collaborators to finish selecting keynotes to access Keynote Manager themselves. The process is further enhanced by the specifier accessing Revit to use a user-created keynote legend to view live keynote placement. ➡️ Read the results: https://lnkd.in/db6cu_j

Last month at AIA24, The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Committee on the Environment recognized the winners of this year’s AIA COTE Top Ten Awards. This week, we highlight the projects with a small taste of the text and images. Each one offers lessons about the value and benefits of holistic design and cross disciplinary collaboration. Tom and Ruth Harkin Center at Drake University Des Moines, Iowa Named for retired U.S. Senator Tom Harkin, who represented Iowa for 30 years and introduced the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in the Senate, this project is a distinguished landmark on Drake University’s Des Moines campus. It houses the The Harkin Institute for Public Policy and Citizen Engagement, which offers policymakers broad access to information and invites citizens to become active participants in public policy. Driven by empathy, the center sets new standards for universal and inclusive design. It uplifts underrepresented voices in the disability community, creating an expanded view of what #inclusivedesign should be and communicating those ideals to a global audience. Projects like Ivy Senior Apartments demonstrate how affordable housing benefits neighborhoods. Someone who once opposed the project now calls it a "blessing.” I’ve learned over my career, this is often the case – and it’s why I will continue to #BuildMoreHousing. #ForAllofUs https://lnkd.in/gHhgk3Nh
