James Harrison and Tyrell Bain took the stage at FITC's #WebUnleashed to discuss how we’re using modern tools to bridge the gaps between design and development at LD! 🧩 Our headless #designsystem powers our Helios platform, acting as a single source of truth between design and code. Design decisions are powered by a tokens structure that allows for single components to be themed endlessly for different brands and contexts. Those tokens feed into an automated pipeline which means that designers can make visual changes within their design software, and push those changes right onto our front end. By standardizing the language and documentation of #components in design, we’re making handoff more clear, and more consistent. We’re now using Figma's dev mode to provide #token documentation, and to directly connect components in design software with their coded counterparts. Finally, we’ve adjusted the handoff process for features or full experiences to deliver the right information at the right time, giving developers a blueprint to build up complex experiences instead of trying to match a picture, or dig through a complex flow. All of the work we’ve done to improve the quality and efficiency of our products really boils down to finding better ways to communicate clearly, and making sure that we’re moving forward speaking a common language. 🤝

Last Friday at #WebUnleashed, we were privileged to hear from some incredible speakers who shared their insights on technology and developer experience. 💬 Jessica Janiuk, Senior Software Engineer, Angular Framework Team at Google: "When you do full app hydration, there’s a period of time before hydration has occurred that your site is there, but it’s not really interactive. Those clicks are lost, typically frustrating to users. So we worked with the wiz team and used the library that allows those events to be captured and queued up, and then once your app bootstraps, it replays all of them in the same sequence that they were clicked in." 💬 Chris Coyier, Co-Founder of CodePen: "One of the differences between a bad experience and what we’re doing with CodePen is that we just give developers a common working state. For example, if they need to write some HTML, we provide a basic scaffold so they can jump right in. It’s like walking into your garage and the light just turns on automatically. You don’t have to think about it, it just works. That’s what good DX is all about." 💬 Douglas Crockford, Founder of JSON.org: "The good thing about JSON is that it's stable forever. You’re working in stacks where everything is constantly changing, upgrades all around you but JSON is one thing you can be sure is not going to break your life." 🌟 A huge thank you to all our speakers for sharing their knowledge and expertise! We can't wait for the next edition of Web Unleashed. #FITC #WebUnleashed #WebUnleashed2024

What an inspiring start to Web Unleashed 2024 🚀! 💬 “We’re witnessing a shift in how JavaScript is written on the server-side—embracing newer runtimes like Deno and Bun that prioritize modern JavaScript features and better developer experience.” — Wes Bos, Full Stack Web Developer & Designer. 💬 “To build scalable, personalized, and localized digital experiences, you need a flexible composable architecture. This approach allows you to create contextually relevant content and leverage tools like SSG, ISR, and SSR to bring content closer to users quickly and efficiently.” — Bermon Painter, Global Innovation & Design Leader, Slalom. 💬 “The industry, for the most part, swings like a pendulum, with old concepts becoming new again and new concepts becoming old. What I posit to you all is instead of chasing the next shiny thing, let's first dig deep and unearth what are the foundational concepts that are the driving force behind that pendulum swinging.” — Arthur Maltson, Senior Distinguished Engineer, Capital One Canada Share your thoughts and takeaways from #WebUnleashed2024 . Let’s keep the conversation going 💡!
