It’s ocean day and we’re heading to take some relaxing breaths by the ocean. Thanks Whale Poop. Whale poop plays a surprisingly vital role in marine ecosystems. Known as the "whale pump," when whales defecate, they release nutrient-rich waste that floats to the ocean surface. This whale poop contains iron and nitrogen, which are essential nutrients that promote the growth of phytoplankton. Phytoplankton not only produce oxygen but also form the basis of the marine food web, supporting a wide range of ocean life. So, whale poop helps sustain healthy ocean ecosystems and even contributes to the global carbon cycle by facilitating the growth of these tiny, yet crucial, organisms. More fish = more whales = more whale poop = more phytoplankton = more oxygen and carbon capture = more fish … etc, etc. So, next time your taking some deep breaths to relax remember to thank a pooping whale. #oceanday #getoutside #ocean
