Researchers have identified tomato mutant population lines that are showing resistance or tolerance to tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV), a significant threat that can reduce yields by 30 to 70 per cent. This milestone is part of the “Novel approaches for the management of tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV) research activity, which involved the screening of over 10,000 plants to find solutions for this critical challenge. Through their detailed work, the team has cloned the ToBRFV coding sequences producing four full-length cDNA clones — all of which have been confused as infectious. This marks a pivotal step forward for safeguarding tomatoes from the damaging effects of wilting and necrosis caused by ToBRFV.
