P0 provides critical data that significantly de-risks the next phase of LM26: compressing plasmas at large scale to reach our transformational milestones—1 keV, 10 keV, and scientific breakeven equivalent. The financing will enable General Fusion to continue advancing its innovative Magnetized Target Fusion (MTF) technology. The investment is being delivered through CNL’s new N2ET program, launched earlier this month, which aims to facilitate collaboration between CNL and other pioneering technology developers. Last summer, we completed the first rapid experimental campaign to scale up for our new fusion demonstration machine, LM26. Our team quickly delivered critical results: achieving symmetrical compression of a solid lithium ring after just five iterations. At the recent ASME (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers) Pressure Vessels & Piping Conference, Jean-Sébastien Dick, PhD, our Manager of Mechanical Engineering Analysis, presented our team’s modelling effort that led to this great result! Our simulations closely aligned with experiment, enabling us to quickly scale from the ring compressor to our larger Prototype 0 testbed. This quick progression is a testament to our dedicated team's innovative and adaptive abilities! 📢 New announcement! Our latest financing round brings the total investment in our LM26 fusion demonstration program to over CA$71 million since its launch in 2023. This funding includes $20 million combined support from new lead investor Canadian Nuclear Laboratories and longstanding supporter BDC Capital. It also includes investments from several company shareholders, including Canada-headquartered world-leading consultancy firm Hatch. Our groundbreaking LM26 machine is designed to achieve fusion conditions of over 100 million degrees Celsius by 2025 and progress toward scientific breakeven equivalent by 2026. Learn more:
Powerful simulation tools help drive engineering excellence. We’re rapidly progressing our Prototype 0 (P0) testbed to scale up for LM26 – conducting weekly compression experiments at the machine’s maximum operations for shaft current, liner temperature, and capacitor bank energy. This one-of-a-kind prototype machine uses magnetic force to compress a solid lithium liner within a millisecond! To support its weekly operation, our talented modelling team, Jean-Sébastien Dick, PhD, Nick Sirmas, Ph.D., and Paul Miao, created a digital replication of P0 – a “simulation twin” – that captures the machine’s electromagnetics, structural dynamics, and heat transfer. The P0 simulation puts industry-leading Ansys and SimuTech Group - Ansys Apex Partner tools to work. General Fusion is building machines that are first of a kind. Simulation helps bridge the physical and virtual worlds with precision – validating what our models tell us about how the machine will perform with the results from the lab. Using the new simulation, our modelling team captured the trajectory of the solid liner compression and structural response of the machine to predict and recommend shot conditions. This allowed us to achieve toroidal flux compression, an important part of our MTF approach. To date, we have completed over 35 compression tests on P0. As a result, the modelling team has confirmed the methodology and tools needed to simulate the dynamics of the full-scale LM26 compression machine, which will be 4x larger than the P0 testbed. #TechTuesday #fusionenergy
