Commercialising fusion energy and our groundbreaking HTS magnet technology

About us

We are developing the technology to deliver clean, secure and affordable fusion energy in the 2030s. Tokamak Energy was founded in 2009 as a spin-off from UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA). Our US subsidiary, Tokamak Energy Inc, was established in 2019. We are the only private fusion company with over a decade’s experience developing the two technologies that offer the most efficient and commercially attractive route to fusion energy; the compact spherical tokamak and high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets. TE Magnetics, our dedicated HTS magnet business division, is focussed on becoming the leading supplier of HTS technology for fusion and other exciting new applications, including science, renewable energy and propulsion on land, in water air and space.

  • To deliver #fusion power as a clean, limitless energy source for the future, we need to develop 'fusion blankets' to capture the energy from fusion reactions. We are delighted to be working with Idaho National Laboratory (INL) on this essential technology as part of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) $107 million Fusion Innovative Research Engine (FIRE) initiative. Our work with INL and other partners will help ensure the tests have maximum commercial relevance, accelerating the development of this crucial technology in the U.S. #FusionForAll

  • Fusion is at a pivotal moment as it moves from R&D to delivery. Following the Fusion Industry Association's Annual Policy Meeting in Washington DC, Tokamak Energy Inc. President, Michael Ginsberg, EngScD, is speaking this week at #CERAWeek in Houston, which brings together leaders from the energy industry, government, and academia to discuss critical issues and trends shaping the future of energy. We now have the essential enablers for fusion energy technology: high-temperature #superconductors to contain the plasma and AI to accelerate materials and plasma control. With the increasing demand for energy and the need for #energysecurity, fusion offers the potential for clean, limitless, and secure energy for generations to come. The pressing question is, "how to move to commercial delivery?" This was a key focus of the FIA’s policy conference. Here are some of Michael's takeaways: • Advancing from R&D to commercial reality: Achieving a new energy source requires the combined will, efforts and cooperation of governments, private industry, and investors. • Creating value along the way: Commercialising spin-out technologies builds credibility, attracts investment and drives technological advancements. • Building the supply chain: Collaborating with industrial partners and end users helps establish the supply chain and subsystems needed for fusion plants, while also fostering confidence and credibility. • Designing superior technologies: Emerging technologies should be designed to be significantly better than existing ones, offering benefits including lower costs, fewer environmental impacts, and greater, or more reliable, energy output. At Tokamak Energy, we’re developing the technology and building the partnerships to commercialise #fusion and our high-temperature superconducting (HTS) technology. Our recently announced ST40 upgrade, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, exemplifies how the US-UK fusion partnership can advance technology and expertise more swiftly and effectively. Through our TE Magnetics business division, we’re leading the development of HTS technology for fusion and other exciting applications, including renewable energy, power distribution, mobility, and security. The momentum behind fusion is building. Now is the time to seize the opportunity. #FusionForAll #Limitless #FusionEnergy #EnergyTransition #EnergySecurity

This week, we're in Washington DC for the Fusion Industry Association's annual policy meeting. It's a fantastic opportunity for leaders from government, industry, science, and academia to come together and discuss tangible ways to accelerate commercial fusion. Dr Michael Ginsberg, EngScD, President Tokamak Energy Inc., joined other fusion leaders on the ‘United States and United Kingdom Partnership Panel’, alongside Dr Jean Paul Allain from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Saskia Mordijck, Oladipo Okusaga, and Tristram Denton (FIA UK). Our team of Michael Ginsberg, EngScD, Christian Lowis, and Aaron L. W., met with policymakers, fusion developers, and partners such as General Atomics, United States Energy Association, Kyoto Fusioneering, UK Atomic Energy Authority, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Idaho National Laboratory and Savannah River National Laboratory. As part of the U.S. DOE #fusion milestone program, we're designing a fusion pilot plant to demonstrate net energy output in the 2030s. We're partnering with US national labs and universities to accelerate progress. Recently, we announced a partnership with the U.S. DOE and UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero to advance crucial technologies for future fusion power plants through a $52 million upgrade program on our record-breaking ST40 spherical tokamak. This collaboration builds on the strategic fusion partnership announced by the U.S. and UK governments in 2023, allowing our collaborators at universities and national labs in both countries to benefit from cutting-edge research on ST40. We believe that partnerships like these are essential for delivering fusion as a new source of clean, limitless, and secure energy ⚡ #FusionForAll #FusionEnergy #Limitless #EnergySecurity

Our 2025 ST40 campaign is up and running! It may look like a sprinkling of fairy dust, but this #plasma pulse shows boron being introduced into the plasma via our new impurity powder dropper (IPD). Boron is used in the tokamak for wall conditioning, creating a protective layer on the first wall and preventing unwanted impurities like oxygen from entering the plasma. With the IPD, we can investigate the impact of light impurities on the plasma edge. Dropping boron will also reinforce the boron coating in areas where the plasma contacts with the walls. In the future, we plan to use the IPD with lithium to explore its effects on edge and pedestal properties, recycling, and core confinement.   Our main aim for this campaign, which runs until June, is to maximise the #fusion ‘triple product’, a key measure of plasma performance that includes temperature, density, and energy confinement time. ST40 has already achieved the highest triple product of any spherical tokamak (ST). Along with our record 100 million degrees plasma ion temperature - the threshold for fusion energy - this peer-reviewed result places ST plasma physics in the same region as larger conventional tokamaks, achieved in significantly less time and at a lower cost. It demonstrates the exciting potential of the ST pathway to clean, limitless, and secure #fusionenergy#FusionForAll #Limitless #Innovation #CleanEnergyTransition
