GEO Morphix is heading to Erosion Solutions 2024: First Annual Atlantic Canada Erosion Control Conference. Join us on October 24 when Paul Villard and Michael Lawson will share insights into river and channel restoration. Paul will explore the many environmental benefits provided by designed rivers and channels with a special focus on carbon retention. Michael will showcase how promoting resiliency in natural channel design contributes to more effective erosion protection strategies.

Join Paul Villard as he walks along the recently constructed Omagh Tributary corridor realignment in Milton, Ontario, Canada. This corridor was realigned as part of a Mattamy Homes residential subdivision development in collaboration with David Schaeffer Engineering Limited, and NAK Design Strategies, with contractor services provided by Terrain Group and DeKay Construction. In this video, Paul speaks about the science behind realigning corridors and how we build habitats for wildlife long before the homes for people are built. For the full video visit our YouTube channel! Keep an eye on our accounts for more videos from GEO Morphix team members in the future!

Conservation Halton hosted the 17th annual Halton Children’s Water Festival in partnership with Halton Region at Kelso Conservation Area from September 24-27. Over 3,800 students between grades 2-5 participated in fun, inquiry-based activities to learn about the importance of environmental stewardship their local watersheds. This four-day event would not be possible without the support of our sponsors, partners, and our team of over 500 volunteers. Thank you for making the 2024 Halton Children’s Water Festival a success: Halton Region Halton District School Board Halton Catholic District School Board City of Burlington Town of Oakville Town of Halton Hills Wilfrid Laurier University Wolseley Canada Inc. It is our accounting team's time to shine! Noah, Nicole, Mara, and Theresa have been hard at work closing the fiscal year. When asked what got them through this busy period, they all agreed that the work is easy when they get support from such an amazing team. After all, "the whole is always greater than the sum of its parts." Thank you to our accounting team for another successful year!

Happy World Teachers Day! 👩🏫 As a group of environmental professionals specializing in surface water processes, we appreciate the importance of fostering appreciation and knowledge about water for the next generation! For almost 20 years, Conservation Halton has held the Children’s Water Festival at Kelso Conservation Area! Every year thousands of students come to learn more about the importance of water and how we interact with it! GEO Morphix has been proud to support this event for many years. For the second year in a row, we have had the privilege of participating as an activity station. Our station, “Go With the Flow,” gave grade 3 students an opportunity to learn the importance of contact and non-contact forces through sediment transportation and fluvial processes. We have had continued success this year and look forward to participating again in 2025! Thank you to Conservation Halton and volunteers for all of your hard work, our GEO staff members who lead the station, the excellent high school volunteers who helped us, and of course, the students. See you next year!

In honour of World Rivers Day yesterday, we want to highlight the ongoing restoration work the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority (NVCA) has been conducting to enhance the Mad River in partnership with the Friends of the Mad River, which GEO Morphix has had the pleasure of collaborating on. Historically, larger river systems have undergone "hooking," which is the removal of large boulders from the river bed and banks. This act has a noticeable negative impact on river hydraulics and aquatic' habitats. As part of NVCA's restoration of Mad River, large boulders have been reinstalled in the river bed to improve the overall health and habitat of the watercourse. This video shows a boulder immediately following installation. Although sediment is visible in this video, it was very localized as a result of installation and will settle shortly after installation. It does help show the eddies and recirculation zones created by this one boulder. The result is the provision of both resting and feeding opportunities.

For the second year in a row, The Rolling Riverstones participated in The Princess Margaret Walk to Conquer Cancer—and they looked great doing it! Multiple raffles and bake sales were held throughout the summer to raise money for The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. GEO staff, family, and friends collectively donated over $13,000, beating our goal by over $2,500! Thank you to everyone who contributed to this cause with their time, support, or monetary donations – we couldn’t have done it without you.

Today is World Water Monitoring Day! Our field team works extensively with water quality monitoring. We collect discrete and continuous measurements for water quality parameters such as total suspended solids, turbidity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and conductivity. Using our inventory of flow monitoring equipment, we can collect event mean concentrations for each parameter. We use this data for baseline stream characterization, stormwater management compliance and effectiveness monitoring, and post-construction monitoring efforts. Good science starts with good field work. A big thanks to our water quality monitoring team for making that happen!
