Hatchery International celebrates 25 years this year and we look back at our origin and where we're now. Born out of an evolution of Aquaculture North America, Hatchery International started its life as Recirc Today, a publication for readers in the aquaculture industry interested in the emerging Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) technology. The past and current editors of the magazine share their insights in the link below.

Just Published - Selecting lighting systems is critical for maintaining optimal growth, health, and maturity status of fish produced in RAS. A range of species- and life-stage specific factors including visible wavelengths, optimal intensity, and required photoperiod must be considered. #Fromtheeditor: Putting together this anniversary issue felt a little different than the ones we’ve worked on this year because it forced us to reflect on our work in a more macro level. We didn’t want to let this milestone pass us by without acknowledging what came before. A major lesson that I took away from learning more about its 25-year evolution is that this publication is not afraid of change. I think this is unusual in more mainstream print publications.

A group of newly released hatchery fall #Chinook salmon smolts have died at a release site in Beaver Slough, a tributary of the Coquille River. The public discovered the dead fish after The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) released the 37,600 #smolts on Sept. 11. “So much work goes into raising these fish to the smolt stage that it’s a disappointing loss to us, our volunteers and the Coquille Indian Tribe. The local community and anglers also highly value these fish,” said Charleston District fish biologist, Mike Gray.

The draft document mentions a "significant contribution" to the expansion of local First Nations economies on the coast, giving an example of increasing hatchery or processing capacity, or expanded opportunities for multi-trophic aquaculture approaches.
The Government of Canada released its long-awaited transition plan for B.C. salmon farming by 2029. Originally slated to be released at the end of the July, the 20-page draft document outlines some key areas of focus. "Implementation of the Plan is anticipated to take place over a longer period than the five years associated with a transition away from open net-pen salmon #aquaculture," the document says. "Over the next ten years, the Government of Canada, together with its partner agencies, will produce an annual update on progress related to the Plan’s implementation, which will be made available publicly." Construction for an education pavilion at #Muscatine’s historic Fairport Fish Hatchery is underway. The 60-acre area will soon feature an education pavilion to complete the interpretive trail system developed by Friends of Fairport Fish Hatchery. The hatchery has been on the banks of the #MississippiRiver since 1908 when the U.S. Federal Biological Station at Fairport was established to research freshwater #mussels and fish in their natural habitat. At the time, the nation’s supply of #freshwatermussels was being over-harvested to supply the pearl button industry.

#Viewpoint by Randall Brummett, Oregon Anglers Alliance: Instead of arguing about what might be wrong with each other’s research from the perspective of the adaptation mode, the #research community should look for alternative explanations that are coherent with all the available data. In science, when credible data do not conform to theory, it is the theory that should be questioned. Through the lens of phenotypic plasticity, both #hatchery effects on life history and population-level observations of how salmon are reacting to management, can be explained without discounting or denigrating the work of other scientists. #aquaculture #fisheriesmanagement #salmonhatcheries #animalgenetics #geneticsresearch
