The second phase in our collaboration the Maltese Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture has begun! Last week, we received new samples from the MEDIT surveys, including Atlantic horse mackerel (𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘶𝘳𝘶𝘴 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘶𝘳𝘶𝘴), Atlantic chub mackerel (𝘚𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘴), Bogue (𝘉𝘰𝘰𝘱𝘴 𝘣𝘰𝘰𝘱𝘴), and Dolphin fish (𝘊𝘰𝘳𝘺𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘦𝘯𝘢 𝘩𝘪𝘱𝘱𝘶𝘳𝘶𝘴). Our goal? For our team of experts (Emily Gambino, Justin Galea and Francisco Mascareño Suarez) to extract the otoliths and accurately estimate their age. Understanding the age of fish is crucial for effective fisheries management. It allows us to assess population dynamics, establish sustainable catch limits, and safeguard the long-term health of marine resources. With this data, authorities can make informed decisions to protect fish stocks and preserve biodiversity. 🔬 Another year, another Science in the City Malta festival in Valletta disseminating our international research and innovation projects thanks to our RDI team and marine and fisheries biologists at AquaBioTech Group. These projects were shown to a wide range of people from all ages with hands-on examples and head-2-head discussions along Friday 27th and Saturday 28th. It was an absolute pleasure to be part of the exciting Horizon ONE-BLUE: “DISCUSSING CHALLENGES IN THE OCEAN PROTECTION” online webinar, which took place today October 1st, 2024 🕙 10:00 - 11:30 (CEST)   🤝 This meeting is part of the European Maritime Day In My Country initiative, a series of events promoted by the European Commission to raise awareness about the importance of the Oceans and Seas and to engage the public. 💡 Our R&D&I Project coordinator Inés Boujmil, shared a presentation titled “SME’s engagement with society within #EMD In my Country – Malta”, which wonderfully showcased our AquaBioTech Group’s outreach and Ocean Literacy activities and events aligned with the #EMD In My Country.  🐟 As a blue #stakeholder combining #business and #research at once, while contributing to #circular #blueeconomy, #citizenscience and #OceanLiteracy, we identify engagement with #society - in particular with #youth – as an important pillar to achieve #behaviousralchange and to create a blue #momentum at the #local level. 🙌 We were proud to participate in Science in the City Malta, Science in the Citadel (Gozo), while organising Youth-oriented events within #EMD In My Country: 🎯 An “ideathon” in collaboration with #BlueSchools, within our EU FishEUTrust Project, in particular focusing on the FishEUTrust Malta Living Lab !    🎯 A Beach #Cleanup campaign, in collaboration with Żibel within SMARTPOL Project https://lnkd.in/et95b46h !    📣 And we are thrilled to announce the 2nd Edition of an ART Contest Hackathon while shaping a #synergy between the two above mentioned projects, as we have selected an #ArtContest in line with tackling #marinepollution and #sustainable #seafood, to be the challenge for this year within the framework of EMD in my Country 2024 !    🔔 Stay tuned for more news and updates !  #EMD2024 #EMDInMyCountry #EuropeanMaritimeDay #BeGreenGoBlue #oneblue #horizoneurope #HorizonEU
