I never had the opportunity to meet the Honourable Murray Sinclair, but I join with others in mourning his passing. I first became aware of his work through Manitoba’s pediatric cardiac surgery inquest. His careful and compelling report argued that "the culture of health-care institutions must change." And, indeed, it sparked widespread change in care for children throughout the province, with influence that rippled far beyond Manitoba's borders. Today, Governor General Mary Simon’s challenged: “as a nation, let us honour his memory and sacrifice by forging ahead on the path of reconciliation.” In this spirit, I share the TRC calls to action in health.

  • HEC is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the formidable Murray Sinclair, Anishinaabe senator and Chief Commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). He helped us all to understand that reconciliation is a journey, not a destination. We will forever be grateful for the wisdom he shared. "Achieving reconciliation is like climbing a mountain — we must proceed a step at a time. It will not always be easy. There will be storms, there will be obstacles, but we cannot allow ourselves to be daunted by the task because our goal is just and necessary. Remember, reconciliation is yours to achieve." The TRC Calls to Action are tools which guide our work at every level. Our commitment to reconciliation continues and we will not forget the role he played in bringing to light the stories of so many. https://lnkd.in/gedixxCa Read the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: 94 Calls to Action at https://lnkd.in/gz6q8Ce

I recently had the opportunity to attend Healthcare Excellence Canada‘s Patient Safety Week, and I left feeling inspired and energized! One session that truly stood out was the webinar titled "Let’s Talk About Safer Care in the Community." It sparked some deep insights on what compassionate care really means in everyday interactions within the Canadian healthcare system. Here are a few thoughts that resonated with me: - So many people are just trying to survive, and it’s clear that relationship building needs to be a priority. We must create bridges to help those who feel lost or alone find the support they need. - Care should always be offered with respect and personalized to each individual. Compassion is at the core of effective healthcare, and it’s essential that we treat every person as a unique individual. - Trust is everything. How can we provide compassionate care that focuses on loneliness and vulnerability? It starts with making trust central to our interactions. When patients feel they can trust us, they are more likely to open up. - Compassionate care means advocating for our patients. They should know we genuinely care about them and that their voices matter. When patients feel valued and understood, it creates a powerful environment for healing. - The vulnerability I witnessed during this session was profound and inspiring. It reminded me how important it is to create spaces where patients can express themselves without fear of judgment. This experience reinforced my belief that at the heart of patient safety and quality care lies compassion. As upcoming health professionals, we have the incredible opportunity to make a real difference in people's lives by focusing on trust, personalization, and genuine human connection through re-enforcing quality improvement and patient safety. I think it is so important to consider the healthcare determinants of health when implementing these changes in the future. I’m excited to utilize these insights in the near future given this is one of my interest areas in public health and healthcare! How do you foster compassionate care in your work?
