Excellent piece by Nushaiba Nanjiba on the importance of casual social interactions and how they are vital for social wellbeing. So great to see the HNC x Happy Cities Building Social Connections Toolkit being referenced, too, thank you Nushaiba! "Casual social interactions are very small things that can influence someone’s day-to-day life and give people a chance to connect." 🫶 SFU Department of Gerontology
Casual social interactions—like a friendly chat with a neighbor or a familiar face on the bus—play a vital role in social wellbeing, especially for older adults who’ve experienced #housing precarity. These everyday connections offer a sense of #belonging and reduce #isolation. Our latest blog from Nushaiba Nanjiba highlights the importance of housing that encourages these interactions, creating supportive, vibrant communities. 🔗 Read the blog post here: https://lnkd.in/gFY9Jw9f SFU Department of Gerontology

Writer, speaker, learner. Author of Happy City, working on new book about designing social trust back into modern life..
We can solve the climate crisis, the housing crisis and the crisis of social isolation at the same time. I'm excited to join Lisa Helps and Don Iveson, ICD.D for an opening plenary discussion at the 2024 Livable Cities Forum in Vancouver. This session dives into how housing can do much more than just provide shelter. It can be a powerful tool to combat climate change, fight isolation and loneliness, and reduce homelessness. If this kind of multi-solving interests you, check out the LCF program and join the Happy Cities sessions on: -guidelines for sociability in multi-family housing (with Hey Neighbour Collective ), and; -measuring the quality of life in public spaces (with Evergreen) See you there! https://lnkd.in/gFAyn9gN

We're looking forward to this event from GenWell, coming up next month in Vancouver! HNC's project director, Michelle Hoar, will be there, alongside our colleague Madeleine Hebert with Happy Cities, talking about building community and social connectedness in multi-unit homes. See you there? ☀️
Speaker Announcement 🎙️✨ Michelle is passionate about addressing the epidemic of loneliness and social isolation. Michelle manages the Hey Neighbour! Collective's operations, including strategic partnerships, fundraising, and financial administration. As the co-founder of The Tyee, she led business operations from 2003 to 2016, establishing it as one of Canada's top independent media outlets. What is The Hey Neighbour! Collective? The Collective is building community, social connectedness and resilience in multi-unit housing communities. Why? Because The Collective believes that loneliness and social isolation are growing health concerns. Where better to start making human connections than right at home? As a mother of two young daughters, a renter since age 19, and an avid community gardener and cyclist. One of her favourite hobbies is talking to strangers. 🙌 📅 Date: November 4-6 📍 Location: Vancouver, BC 🎟️ https://loom.ly/pXwqTnM #genwellproject #canadianhumanconnectionconference #speakerannouncement #publicspeaker #canadianpublicspeeches

On October 3rd, we hosted 'Design Tools to Support Wellbeing,' the fourth webinar in the 'Housing That Connects Us' series and part of our Building Social Connections project in partnership with Happy Cities and the SFU Department of Gerontology. This particular webinar focused on the "toolbox" of design ideas to support the goal of increasing sociability (and, therefore, neighbourliness!) in multi-unit housing, for both pre-existing and new builds. We were grateful to have over 200 participants join from all around the world, and the hour flew by with excellent discussion between HNC's Project Director Michelle Hoar, Happy Cities' Senior Housing Specialist Madeleine Hebert, and an incredibly engaged audience (our chat was busy!). 🐝 For those who may have missed the live event, or for anyone wanting to rewind the clock, the full webinar recap - including the Zoom recording and presenter slides - are now available on our website. https://lnkd.in/greBakKh #HousingThatConnectsUs #webinar #BuildingSocialConnections
