NEW BRIEF | Indigenous peoples are disproportionately impacted by climate change and fossil fuel development in Canada, yet they are leading the way in transitioning to renewable energy. With Canada’s new Sustainable Jobs Act, the government should ensure that policies to enable job creation and support workers are developed in full collaboration with Indigenous peoples. In a new brief from Indigenous Clean Energy & IISD, Laura Cameron, Freddie Huppé Campbell and Mackenzie Roop offer recommendations on how sustainable jobs programs and investments can advance Indigenous-led solutions. These include: ✅ Advancing joint governance. ✅ Supporting Indigenous definitions of “sustainable jobs”. ✅ Enabling Indigenous equity. ✅ Scaling up Indigenous workforce capacity building. Sustainable jobs policies and investment must be co-developed with Indigenous people while adhering to Indigenous jurisdiction. To tackle socio-economic inequities, address the uneven impacts of the fossil fuels industry, and to meet the federal government’s commitments to transforming its relationship with Indigenous Peoples, sustainable jobs efforts must advance Indigenous self-determination.
