Alberta can be a global model for tourism. That's the message that ITA CEO Shae Bird is bringing to a global audience this week alongside Travel Alberta CEO/Deputy Minister of Tourism & Sport David F. Goldstein when they speak at the prestigious Destinations International annual convention. They will speak about the strategy, collaboration and partnership that has helped amplify the success of such experiences as Metis Crossing, and how this community-led approach can lead to long-term social, economic and cultural benefits.

Alex Janvier was an iconic and beloved Indigenous man with a gift to share with the world: his art. His art is a testament to Indigenous culture and people's resiliency, beauty, and strength. He will be missed, but in Indigenous Ways of Being, he is now soaring high with the eagles, returning to his true form as a spirit in the Spirit World. It is an honour to have his gallery as an ITA member.

Today, we honor the Great Mothers – the life-givers who nourish us all. To the amazing mothers who wipe our tears since birth, share in our growth, and hold our communities together as matriarchs, we cherish you and are grateful for the incredible role you play! To all the incredible Aunties who hold our communities together! Your wisdom, strength, and fierce love guide us. We are so grateful for you and that wicked laugh you can hear from a mile away! It takes a village to raise children, but it also takes a village to thrive together. Cheers to you on this Mother's Day. #IndigenousTourismAlberta #IndigenousTourism #MothersDay #IndigenousMothersDay #Indigenouswomenmatter

May 5th came and went. It is important to understand that advocacy for Missing, Murdered, and Exploited Indigenous People isn't just one day. It's every day. We recognize the role many of our members play as community figures, family matriarchs, aunty givers, advocates, artisans, and so on. While we share and amplify the amazing work in the tourism industry, we recognize that it is only possible because it is our members that open their hearts and spirits with us at ITA and that means we stand with you in solidarity, and we hope to help foster a safe place in the industry for all Indigenous peoples to exist.

May 5th - National Day for Awareness - Red Dress, Shirt, Ribbon Day to honor the thousands of missing, murdered and exploited Indigenous Peoples (MMEIP). This day is also known as Red Dress Day. An art initiative founded by Metis artist Jamie Black to honor Missing, Murdered, Exploited Indigenous Peoples. Each dress represents the spirits of loved ones, gone to soon, taken from life without consent, and now Red dresses have become symbolic of the crisis as a result of her installation. * Almost 50% of cases remain unsolved * 50% of Exploited or trafficked people are Indigenous (90% are Indigenous youth) * 84% of Indigenous Peoples have experienced violence * Indigenous women are 12 times more likely to go missing, be murdered, targeted for trafficking than getting married, getting a degree, or having children These are the statistics currently for our people. ACTION is NEEDED! WHAT CAN YOU DO? * Read the National Inquiry Final Report: Reclaiming Power & Place and the 231 Calls for Justice * Read the Roadmaps for Action: 2021 MMIWG National Action Plan and the 2022 Progress Report on the National Action Plan * Attend a local event on Feb 14th, May 5th, Oct 4th (there are many across Turtle Island) * Hang a red dress in your window or porch or front yard * Wear RED, purchase Red shirts, pins from Indigenous vendors (take a photo and share on social media to increase awareness) * Support a MMEIP family, engage families and survivors for awareness sessions * Read a Book, a stories of lived experiences: Books: MMIW Resource Guide * Follow social media pages for MMEIP, MMIW, MMIWG2S+, MMIR, MMIR Together, if everyone does something, takes one action no matter how small, we can change the marginalization of Indigenous peoples from the history of colonization, and keep our people safe. #MMEIP #familiesfirst #RedDressDay #231CallsToJustice
